HELP - it's breaking my heart

Our 3 yr old son has been SCD for exactly 4 months. Lately, he cries

and asks for " food. " I know that he sees foods around our house and

at daycare that he cannot eat and he doesn't understand why he can't

eat them. At home, my husband and I try to eat foods that we know he

has no interest in or we make meals that we all can eat. It just

breaks our hearts that he says " food, food " and he is not comforted

by the food choices that we give him.

He is still on a VERY limited diet, consisting of:

* beef, chicken, and pork

* eggs

* pears

* peaches

* bread (made from egg whites/yolks, no nut flour)

* white grape juice (extremely diluted)

The fruits are peeled and cooked. The only way to get veggie into him

is by grinding well-cooked green beans and hiding them in chicken

nuggets (chicken and egg) or by mixing a little cooked squash into

the peaches. Occasionally, he will eat a couple bites of avocado and

he recently has eaten a bit of wild-caught canned salmon (a few

bites). Once in a great while, he will eat pork rinds, which is the

only crunchy thing he can eat.

Can anyone provide suggestions of what we can do to be a bit more

creative or foods we might try that we are likely to have success

with? He cannot do bananas and is disinterested in veggies (even

squash fries) and he's been off apples since January b/c of yeast

issues.

Please help- your ideas are appreciated.

I hear you. I don't have anything terrific to offer you, but here

is a chicken patty recipe I use.

1 pkg chicken thighs fillets (boneless skinless)

anyone one of the following: 1 shrededd and drained zuccini, or

cooked green beans mashed, or acorn squash cooked

1 egg

1 small onion shredded

curry powder to taste

cumin, pinch or two

salt pepper

place chicken in food processor and run till smooth. add other

ingredients. form into patties and fry.

I hope he likes them.

Honestly, you're not going to like my suggestion, but I'm going to make it

anyway. Put your entire family on SCD, at least when you are at home. take

everything out of the house that isn't SCD okay.

I have more than one reason for this. Chances are, your entire family does

have gut issues. Ours did, and so have many others. Here are some non-autism

symptoms of gut disorders: joint pain, headaches, migrains, upset stomachs,

reflux, nightmares, snoring, red cheeks and ears, allergies, flatulence and

rashes.

You can always get something off diet out of the house, but the enviornment

you create will make your child feel so much better, and your family will be

happier too.

I told you, you wouldn't like it.

This recipe sounds really yummy, . I just want to cautions that

Everyone needs to make sure that they are making their own curry

powder. Curry powder in the store is a spice mix and mixes are

illegal.

Shari,

My chicken cookies might be enough of a treat, I don't know if he can eat all

the foods in them: Chicken, squash, avacado, pear sauce, honey cinnamin, a bit

of nutmeg and vanilla . I think you could do it without the honey. The recipe

is in the back posts, I am movingor I would type it out or find the link for

you. Hope this helps.

I appreciate all of these ideas and suggestions. After I typed my

message, I had a spurt of creativity and I made him " pizza " using an

egg, a little reduced tomato juice, some hamburger, and roasted red

peppers. He ate and LIKED it! I also tried making squash fries again -

- the first time I got them really crispy, but he still refused them.

Oh well, they were delicious!

Thanks again. More ideas are welcome!

Hi Shari,

I am not a mom, but I am on SCD and in the beginning I used to be

hungry a lot. Since I was on a very limited diet, I started eating

larger servings to fill me up. For example, I put cut-up chicken

pieces with salt (maybe pepper) on a small electric grill, with the

skin, which gets very tasty. I also take zucchinis, peel, cut them

lengthwise into small stripes, spray olive oil on them, and put them

on the electric grill until they get a little brown and crunchy. I

find them to be a good substitute for fries. If he eats pears and

peaches, how about baking them with a little sweetener and putting

them on top of his bread for a sweet treat? Out of grated

zucchinis, grated carrots (use the same amount for each), a few eggs

to hold it together, and salt (maybe pepper), you can fry vegetable

patties which are really yummy (squeeze out the juice that forms

from the zucchinis before you put the egg-s so the patties won't be

too soaked). I freeze a lot of the pre-cooked things and whenever I

am hungry, I take something out of the freezer. Peaches with water

(and sweetener?) can be frozen into popsicles. I also slice cooked

chicken breast, freeze it, and use it with white SCD bread to make

sandwiches. On top of my sandwich I put mustard and a slice of

cucumber (maybe you could put mayo or an avocado dip?) When he is a

little bit more advanced, you can use chopped hazelnuts with salt,

thyme, basil and majoram to bread the chicken with by first dipping

the chicken into an egg, and then into the hazelnut mixture, frying

it for one minute on each side, and then putting it in the oven at

200 degrees Celcius for 15 minutes. Yummy!

It breaks my heart too to think that he is only three and has to be

on a diet already.

Good luck!

Ooops, one correction to the zucchini/carrot burgers: they don't

taste good unless they have some chopped onions in them as well.

I bought an apple peeler at Linens and Things, and my little guy loves to have a

peeled cored apple that is cuti into rings - takes 1 minute...apples are legal

SCD.

He's been off apples since January due to yeast issues, so I'm a

little hesitant about trying them again. But, when we do, I will

dfinitely try the apple rings you describe. Very creative!

I don't know how much your little one can comprehend, but a very

specific social story helped with my little guy when we started GFCF.

His speech therapist made it for me and described the forbidden food

as " food that hurts his belly and makes it hard for him to pay

attention " . It was great. actually started referencing the

story when we told him there was food he couldn't eat one day. A year

later, he just asked me to read it again tonight at bedtime. I plan

to revisit that social story frequently over the next few weeks as we

are planning to start SCD when he is home on Christmas break :)

This totally breaks my heart too! I missed this when you first posted -- did

you get some good recipes? Crustless pumpkin pie is smooth and creamy and sweet

(& filling). There is a recipe for vegetable popsicles that has been posted

here (they taste like fruit, the veggies are hidden). To me the carrot curls

recipe salted tastes a lot like a french fry. Celtic sea salt makes everything

more flavorful, BTW. We saute prochuttio like bacon until it's crispy.

It's time to start serving vegetables even if he refuses them. They have to

start looking normal on his plate for him to eventually try them. I also always

found the best place to intro a vegetable was in the car with a tiny condiment

cup. It's amazing how a 20 minute car drive will result in a kid taking their

first bite of broccoli.

Hi Shari,

Could you give me the recipe for the nut-flour free bread? I can

relate to your sense of frustration about your child tolerating such

few foods - mine is still on a very limited variety at 3 weeks. I am

trying to figure out ways to mix up the few foods he can eat to make

them more interesting and provide some variety. Have you tried the

banana pancakes from BTVC?

I hide veggies in hamburgers I also hide veggies in

homemade popsickels, u can try chicken pancakes w/

veggies I use the dark welches juice deluted

w/pureeded carrots dont put alot of carrots in cause

there strong in taste.i've done it in homemade jello

to. Try veggies that dont have a strong taste. My son

loved greenbeans in a can til I started the intro diet

and got frozen ones he wouldnt touch them for 3 weeks

now he eats them it takes time and a lot of patients.

Just one day at a time. My son is 5 and its harder for

him cause he totally knows what he's missing. It does

get easier. Tabaitha son asd 5yrs old on scd for 3

weeks Just remember your son has only you to help make

him better and you can do it I have faith in you and

all the parents who love there children enough to do

whatever it takes for them. They only have us. Keep up

the good work.

Again.... so many great suggestions. Thank YOU everyone!

- I used Sheila's dairy-free, nut-free bread recipe. Lately,

I've been using squash instead of avocado and we think it 'looks'

more like bread.

Sheila - Have you ever made it into crackers?? I'd like to make the

batter really thin and crispy and cut into cracker shapes (triangles

or little squares). Any ideas??

Lately, I've been using squash instead of avocado and we think

it 'looks' more like bread.>>>>>

I used to make it with a mix of cooked squash and avocado and it came

out brownish (like whole wheat)

I've made crackers but they are pretty delicate if you dry them a

lot. I like them for grill cheese and sandwiches (chicken or egg

salad etc..).
