Guest guest
Please help, I have 5 yr old twins both autistic. I am determined to switch over to the SCD from GFCF. I only saw a few improvements from GFCF diet and from my research on Stan Kurtz's website have decided to switch. My boy twin will only eat quesedilla w/ almond cheese, pizza, rice crackers, and corn chips... he does not eat any veggies, how can I start him on this diet so he won't strave. My girl twin I think is ready for this diet as she refuses to eat any rice pasta which was once loved and craved and is now starting to eat veggies (believe it or not she is lower on the spectrum but is becoming more flexible than brother). Scared to death, but determined this is the right thing to do. Also do I keep the dairy out? They can handle the almond cheeses which have a slight amount of casien in them or do I use the legal cheeses? Thanks, R.Englund
Guest guest
In 'Gut and Psychology Syndrome', Natasha -McBride recommends to wait 6 months into SCD before you add casien into the diet of an autistic child, and add in the form of home made goats yoghurt. I recommend you get this book (ISBN 0-9548520-0-1) Also, maybe the small amount of casien in the almond cheese could be one of the reasons why gf/cf has shown little success for your kids. These diets really need vigilence to be successful, and a food/behaviour journal to check for other food intolerances. Having said that, your boys diet sounds quite unhealthy. Try substantially reducing his grains, then maybe hunger will cause him to try more meat, eggs, vegetables and fruits. But watch for food intolerances when you add new foods in. Maybe this sounds too harsh, I don't know, but autism is such a terrible disease, I believe a few hungry days will be worth it in the long run, when it's potentially possible to improve the lives of these children. Guest guest
how can > I start him on this diet so he won't strave. At first the new foods will be quite strange to him and the bad gut bugs will be craving the old foods. He may not eat. Just offer the intro diet foods and keep him hydrated with water and diluted grape juice. You can make popsicles from the juice. You can put broth and pureed carrots in the popsicles, too. Be sure you cook the soup the recommended length of time. Some people have trouble with carrots if they are not cooked 4 hours. We have very sneaky ways to hide vegetables in things. Check all the recipes on www.pecanbread.com. You can put pureed carrots in a " Sneaky Veggie Pancake " . If your son normally has diarrhea, he'll need to be on the intro 5 days. But if not, he only needs to be on for 2 days. After that you can introduce an additional food; ripe banana (with spots) is a good choice since it doesn't have to be cooked. Also do I keep the dairy out? They can handle the almond cheeses > which have a slight amount of casien in them or do I use the legal > cheeses? I don't think the almond cheese is legal. Keep dairy out for about 4 months. Then you can try a small amount of legal cheese or SCD yogurt and see how they do with it. My son, for example, does fine with SCD goat yogurt and legal goat cheese. Welcome to the group! mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
