Excessive hand washing

My 8 yr old daughter (extremely allergic, SCD 9 months) has lately

begun to have terribly crippling anxiety and OCD symptoms, usually in

the half hour around mealtimes. She washes her hands repeatedly,

won't be touched and is excessively paranoid about dirt. She has

done v well on SCD, having been a v sick child for years. The OCD

symptoms are quite specific-usually when she has a flare-up, perhaps

due to too much yeast, she is sniffly, maybe a bit asthmatic, even

more sensitive than normal to foods. We do the yeast protocol adn

she usually improves.

These OCD symptoms are crippling our family life, and beginning to be

very worrying.

We suspect that too much sweet food has crept into her diet. SHe

doesn't eat honey at all, but gets a little fruit, and a little

butternut squash with each meal (roasted). Otherwise she has a good

SCD diet with a lot of restriction because she can't eat nuts at all

(she can't even look at a nut without starting to come out in hives,

nor honey, nor eggs, nor a whole pile of other foods.

Is there anyone out there with similar experience? I am reasoning

that specific symptoms may have a specific cause. My daughter has

had a lot of trouble from yeast/candida, and that remains the main

suspect. Thank you anybody who even thinks about helping us, because

we really need some help.

Hi Aidan,

Are you using anything to treat the yeast?

Sheila,

Thanks for responding. We are persisting with the goat's milk

yoghurt, as we believe it has really helped her. SHe also gets

carrot juice with garlic, fresh and in the form of ice, with all

meals bar breakfast.

I am wary about giving her Diflucan or Itraconozole (can't remember

the brand name) as this child has had Diflucan lots of times in the

past-it helps, but if you don't change the actual diet itself the

problems return. She absolutely hated nystatin, which we had to get

from the states, because amazingly, it is mixed with sugar in

pharmacies here. Again Candex and Candizyme are not available over

here, but I can probably get them sent.

My daughter is very allergic, though strangely, like I said, she

doesn't seem that allergic per se at the moment, just v v OCD. Her

allergic condition makes us very wary of adding new treatments, such

as anti-fungals (even caprylic acid, oil of oregano or grapefruit

seed extract), as she often simply can't tolerate them, and we think

we need to change the fundamentals of what she is eating anyways.

I know you have experience with yeast problems Sheila so I would

really appreciate your advice on this. What do you think?

Most pharmacies do mix it with sugar, you can get it made without

sugar at compounding pharmacies or at pharmacies where they mix it

themselves staring with pure powder.

I tried Nystatin and it made me very stomach sick (cramps etc..). I

had better luck with the carrot juice and garlic (although on its

own it didn't take care of the yeast just made it a bit more

bearable and prevented constipation and impactions.)

Candizyme is what I used. I started with a small amount in water

and gradually increased to the full dose. I don't tolerate most

supplements and didn't want to use the capsules.

If you think this is brought on by yeast I would go with your gut

feeling and try to address it. The yeast enzymes are very helpful

if tolerated. I reduced all natural carbs for a long time but that

didn't really do much against the yeast. Changing the fundamentals

of what she eats may be enough for her. Yeast enzymes, probiotics

etc.. can help speed things up.

I stumbled across your email...contactg Natren in Westlake Village, CA. We get

our probiotics from them, and in powder form, so we mix it with what our son

will tolerate or simply with water if she will do that. If they cannot help you

they may be able to direct you. THe woman who started the company, her family

served the royal family in what was Yugoslavia for years - whe is the go to for

all things probiotic. Her standards were read into the Library of Congress as

the benchmark ones for this type of product it seems. All I know is that

company is VERY knowledgable and helpful. I would start there, and seek their

help if you cannot obtain their products. GOod luck. Diane
