Guest guest
Hi, I don't really know where to start. My son is 10 years old dx with ADHD for 3 years and he is on Ritalin. He has always had carb cravings which I didn't like or understand. Also he is very particular about what he will eat. We started our son on gfcf about 2 months ago. And through self educating I realized he also needs to be off rice and potatos. (He craves those foods) To me the next step was SCD. I have gotten the book, read what I could, and feel totally lost. I don't understand about the dairy, in the book it says for parents of autistic children a decision needs to be made to implement the diet with or without the dairy??? My son had his blood and urine checked. His IgG came back high for milk. I don't think he can handle dairy products right now. Also in the book it talked alot about diarrhea, my son is ten years old I don't know what his poop looks like, but he says he does not have diarrhea. What does that mean. My son is on lots of supplements from his DAN doctor. Do your childrens take supplements? Also what about the modified diet by Pamela Ferro written about in the book, it elimimates the use of dairy for 3-6 months. I did not see a web site for that, how do I find out more info? I still don't really understand the intro diet??? Thanks Patty mom to Josh 10, adhd, beginning scd
Guest guest
Hi my name is Tabaitha My sons 5 and he's adhd and also craves things. He's been on the intro diet for scd since sun. afternoon. Its hard cause he wants all the stuff he can nolonger have. But we just keep going forward everyday I wake up and say just alittle while longer and I tell him mommys trying to fix the inside of your tummy it helps alittle. I know they say you need to do intro but dont have to. But its better for them if you do. My sons school is so helpful they keep an eye on him so he doesnt eat anything he's not suppose to and they let me know if he's acting out. Today I love that school they seem to be helping as much as they can. I do know from person feelings I didnt want to put him on drugs I wanted to do something that would hopefully cure him not just get him through the days. But thats my personal feelings on that. If you'd like to chat I'm hear anytime. Tab --- Patty wrote: > Hi, > I don't really know where to start. My son is 10 > years old dx with > ADHD for 3 years and he is on Ritalin. Guest guest
Hi, Patty, I don't understand about the dairy, in the book it > says for parents of autistic children a decision needs to be made to > implement the diet with or without the dairy??? Right! Believe it or not, some will try dairy early on. But as Pam Ferro and others advise, it is a good idea to wait 3-4 months before trying any dairy, so that you know for sure that the initial die- off/body adjustment to SCD is not a reaction to dairy. Although some people do SCD completely dairy-free, we know that many who were once CF can tolerate goat yogurt and goat cheese. (Some even do cow dairy.) The yogurt and cheese-making processes make a change in the casein protein. The probiotics in the yogurt are wonderful for healing the gut; better than probiotics in capsules. And, speaking for my son, it was such a treat to eat goat cheese instead of the strange articial cheeses we tried on GFCF. Also in the book it talked alot > about diarrhea, my son is ten years old I don't know what his poop > looks like, but he says he does not have diarrhea. What does that > mean. Not everyone starts this diet having diarrhea. Some are constipated. Some don't think they have BM issues, but need behavioral improvement. My son was 8 when I started monitoring his poops. I didn't know what they looked like, but I sure knew he was getting into trouble at school for spending too much time in the restroom. Looking at the poops helps a lot with seeing if he is tolerating a particular food. Maybe you can ask him to describe what the poops look like to you, if you don't want to invade his privacy. My son is on lots of supplements from his DAN doctor. Do > your childrens take supplements? Lots for our kids are on supplements. Be sure they are legal. Check the lists on www.pecanbread.com Also what about the modified diet by > Pamela Ferro written about in the book, it elimimates the use of > dairy for 3-6 months. I did not see a web site for that, how do I > find out more info? All the advice about starting out is on the pecanbread.com website. It deals with not having dairy early on. I still don't really understand the intro diet??? The intro gives you a jump-start. It kills off a lot of bad gut bugs. It is made up of foods that are easy to digest for most people. Here is a list of what you can eat on the intro diet: http://www.pecanbread.com/new/scdfoods1.html#intro Please study all parts of the www.pecanbread.com website. I really think it will help explain all your questions, but if not, we are here to help. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/04 > Thanks > Patty mom to Josh 10, adhd, beginning scd >
Guest guest
Hi Patty, We did GFCF, to begin with too, my son is nearly 4 now and he has formed stools too, guess we are lucky, but I dont know what it means either. He began craving wheat especially and ate enormous amounts of Wheat Bix and bread, and when he was really little and having bottles he craved dairy heaps more than a normal child would, earlier this year we went to the DAN doctor and went off all gluten, dairy, corn and soy. After that he craved potatoes, rice and bananas and apples and grapes. I then took out sugar other than that in pears, and yeast because I thought it might ease up his ADHD and horrid temper. We had bloods done recently for the first time and my son being sensitve to dairy was advised to stay off it entirely (goat milk included), for about 6 months into SCD. We have tons off supplements, about 10 of them, and do epsom salts baths nearly every day. Have you looked at pecanbread.com - its got a list of food for the intro diet that is easy to follow and if you have been having dairy beforehand you need to do it for more than 2 days - ask the other listmates with more experience on this one as we had been off dairy for 6 months we only did it for two days - now I made a mistake by giving pear juice instead of juiced pears, and we will need to do another 2 days of intro again but I have decided we will do that in a few weeks when we have settled into things a bit better. The next phase of the diet we need to adhere to for 3 months and thats as far as I know so far. But the pecanbread.com is a great site - I have had to read some of it about 3 or 4 times to take it all in but the list of foods is terrific. Hope this helps - Kylie > > Hi, > I don't really know where to start. My son is 10 years old dx with > ADHD for 3 years and he is on Ritalin. Guest guest
Hi Patty, <<<< Also in the book it talked alot > about diarrhea, my son is ten years old I don't know what his poop > looks like, but he says he does not have diarrhea. What does that > mean.>>>> The phone rang and I forgot to add this: If he doesn't want to talk about his poop with you you could show him this chart http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Stool_Scale and he could give you a number instead of having to describe the stool. Or he could write the number down on a chart. Sheila
