Guest guest
Hi all, For about the last 3 months, I have been having low blood sugars, hypoglycemia. Tuesday, I had a 2 hour glucose tolerance test. My fasting BS was 97. I then drank the glucose " cocktail " and had my BS checked two hours after that. After the 2 hours, my BS was only 111. I have an appointment with my doc tomorrow, but I wanted to get any information from those of you who have experience with this as to what you think. My doc called me and said that the test was " completely normal. " Wouldn't my BS have been higher than 111 after that glucose drink? That still sounds low to me only being 14 points higher than my fasting BS. What to you all think. Yesterday, my fasting was 73, at which point I start having symptoms (actually even at 82 I have symptoms) of sweating, dizziness, nausea, tired, shaky, etc. I drank a regular pop (not diet), ate a Pop-Tart, peanut butter crackers, and a granola bar only to have my BS go up 20 points. I would truly appreciate your advice/experience about this. Thank you! My thoughts and prayers are with you all!! T. (Ohio)

Guest guest
, While it appears that you ARE having some problems with hypoglycemia, your response rate with additional glucose seems to be excellent. For a non-diabetic, a BS of 111 after the cocktail would be normal. That's a great BG and a good response. Even your response after the crackers, soda, granola bar and pop-tarts was great - you responded as a non-diabetic would. If a diabetic person had consumed that many carbs without the assistance of insulin to bring their BG down, they probably would have had a BG around 225-250 or so. (I'm using myself as an example - every diabetic has a different ratio and a different response). So the fact that you only had a BG that was 20 points higher than your fasting BG indicates that your insulin reaction is normal. It means that your endocrine functions are reacting well and producing the right amounts of insulin to bring your levels down to a normal point. What you need to address is the hypoglycemia, and the reasons for that. Hopefully your doctor will be able to investigate this and find the answers for you.
