Yogurt, probiotics and digestive enzymes

Hi everyone-

I've had my 2 ASD kids on SCD for a few months now. I was giving them

5 big spoonfuls of yogurt a day, but noticed that they were really

craving the yogurt (which is not a good sign) and acting kinda silly

after taking it and stopped. I discontinued the yogurt fearing that

they were not tolerating it, but would really like to keep using it.

Any suggestions? Should I have started with a smaller dose (I started

with a spoonful) for a longer period? Also-should I give the yogurt

with a digestive enzyme with lactase to break down the yogurt? I have

heard that you shouldn't take an enzyme at the same time as a probiotic

because it destroys the probiotic. Is that true? Many thanks for any

response-Sally Kim (mom to Chloe (ASD-SCD since 7/07) and Rhys (ASD-SCD

since 9/07).

What kind of yogurt : goat, cow or nut milk yogurt?

We often suggest starting with a teeny amount. 1/8 tsp every second

or third day. This allows you to guage reactions and stop if you

need to. It also allows the body to detox easier if you startw tih

a small amount and slowly increase it.

It depends on the enzymes that you use. Proteases, for example, can

damage parts of the bacteria cell.

Hi Sheila!

I was giving my kids the goat yogurt. I'm concerned about casein in

the yogurt. My kids are both casein intolerant, autistic, with leaky

gut syndromes. They were hooked on the yogurt and were begging for

more (which is usually not a good sign). They were also acting

silly, which led me to fear that maybe casein was the culprit. Is

there a significant amount of casein in the yogurt? Thanks so much

Yes, there is casein in the yogurt, but if made properly the casein

shape should be denatured and easier to digest.

There may be a problem with the yogurt or they just may need a little

more time to heal before trying the yogurt again.

To see what is going on would you please answer a few questions:

1.How long is it now since they have been off the yogurt?

2. What starter and did you follow the directions at

http://pecanbread.com/new/yogurt1.html#make (ie. Heating the milk

to 180°, cooling to room temp before adding starter and incubating at

100-110°F for 24 hours..)

3. how are their bm's?

4. How many bm's /day?

5 What foods are they eating?
