Guest guest
Is it unusual for children a few weeks into the diet to be eating tons and tons. Henry doesn't seem unusually hungry for breakfast and lunch but at dinner -- Yikes! Tonight Henry had two lamb chops, almost half a baked acorn squash, three chicken " hot dogs " made by me from finely ground chicken, three scrambled eggs with about a 1/4 cup of pureed carrots (cooked for 4 hours)... and he has eaten a similar amt the past 2 or 3 days...He eats his meal (tonight it was the lamb and squash) and then keeps asking for more. (this after a snack of two lamb chops and a banana in mid-afternoon) Kim, mom to Henry, 7.75, language-based learning disorder, some crohn's markers, GI inflammation, enterocolitis, esophogeal esinophils, multiple bouts of h.pylori. Guest guest
My twins ate us out of house and home for FOUR weeks. In the morning they would eat a dozen eggs between them, a whole chicken and a bag of apples that were cooked into applesauce. It was unbelieveable! They are only 4 years old and were only 28 pounds! Now 6 months later, they are 35 pounds and gaining in every way! They wanted Mcs too but I just finally told them that it hurts their bellies and everytime we pass the golden arches they say THAT HURTS YOUR BELLY! Kids get it better than we do most times! All the best Cindy Mom to and SCD six months HUGE gains and almost healed and recovered! eating us out of house and home > Is it unusual for children a few weeks into the diet to be eating tons > and tons. Guest guest
I've noticed my 8 year old son's appetite has greatly increased too. He's sooo thin, I'm hoping he'll start putting on some weight. However, it does make it harder trying to keep enough food for him. We've been SCD for 3 weeks. I don't know that he's gained weight yet, but I do notice he isn't as pale as he always has been. Yeah! Diane Is it unusual for children a few weeks into the diet to be eating tons and tons. Guest guest
Kim, My son is 8 y/o and has been SCD for 4 months. He still eats like that sometimes. I wonder if he goes through small growing spurts. I have to make sure that when it is like that to give him 1 or 2 snacks in between meals at regular i eating us out of house and home Is it unusual for children a few weeks into the diet to be eating tons and tons. Guest guest
Oops! I have to feed him at regular intervals all day long. Sometimes when he is like that he gets 4 regular meals instead of 3 and snacks. It ended up being every 2 hours he ate with no exceptions. Guest guest
I dont have experience with children on SCD, but just had to put in my two cents. My husband's appetite grew ENORMOUSLY during the first couple of months of the diet. We went to a DAN doctor who is familiar with SCD. He told us that by eating primarily proteins, we had really increased my husbands metabolism... thus requiring his body to eat a whole lot more proteins just to get enough calories to keep going (my husband is extremely thin and doesnt have body fat to use for extra energy). So the doctor reminded us to increase the fats and veggies. Vegar still eats a lot, but he holds onto energy a LOT better with more fats and veggies. He will sometimes just eat a spoonful of fat to give him the energy he needs. A nutritionist we know recommended that each meal be close to 20-30% healthy fats. That isnt for everyone, but is necessary for my husband since he isnt digesting fats (his poo floats, so the DAN man said its a sign of not digesting fats). Not sure how much fats your son is eating, but omega 3s, coconut fat, flax oil, and olive oil are so yummy and help quench an appetite. Another thing I have just learned in biochemistry... the body requires MUCH MORE water to break proteins down into energy than it does with fats and carbs. So be sure your child is drinking enough water in addition to eating as much as he wants. from what I have heard, kids bodies often show them what they need... giving signals for what they are lacking nutritionally (except of course for die- off sugar cravings from bacteria). - scd since april
Guest guest
How wonderful! You didn't say how much he weighs, or how tall your family is, but my guess is that he's starting to eat what his body actually needs. Boys are famous for eating huge amounts of food just before a growth spurt. Kim wrote: Is it unusual for children a few weeks into the diet to be eating tons and tons. Guest guest
, Thanks for the extra insight! One problem I have with my son is he doesn't want to drink much. I make him drink from time to time, but he'll take a sip and not want more. I practically have to force him to drink. He does do better with juice, but still not a great drinker. Anyone else have that problem? Two weeks on the diet tomorrow>>> Huge increases in hunger are very common. Moms and Dads often find they do *a lot* of cooking and food preparation especially at the beginning of the diet. Once people start the diet they often have increased appetites for a few reasons: -they don't feel sick anymore and actually get their appetite back -their body is switching from rumen type digestion to actual human digestion -their body is healing (which will burn extra calories) - and the big one we have noticed on is that children start catching up in growth. Many families reported huge growth spurts. Their body is able to continue normal growth patterns now that it is absorbing nutrients whereas preSCD many have reported their kids were at the lower percentiles for weight and height. Put it all together and you end up with huge appetites. The good news is that it usually settles down after the child catches up to where their weight should be.
