Hi

I know that Elaine does not recommend Iron supplements, however my daughter

is extremely low on iron. Her ferritin is below 3.

I have been told of floravit glutenfree Iron tonic, which does not contain

any brewer's yeast, wheat germ , or honey.

The ingredients are:

Non medical herbal extracts: Aquesous suspensions in fruit syrup of

Rosehips, Chamomile flowers, fennel seed, spinach leaf.

In a base of :

Grape, pear, black currant, cherry, blackberry, carrot juices with ascorbic

acid.

Could you tell me if this is legal?

I have written to Salus Haus and this is what they sent back to me by

e-mail.

Thanks so much for your help.

Sorry, but this isn't legal.

Do you know why her ferritin is so low? Is she having diarrhea?

Limited variety of foods etc..?

Hi,

Chicken liver pate, dark meat chicken and spinach are good for low iron.

I've also heard vitamin C (a bit of orange juice maybe) will help it to

absorb. I've always had a problem with anemia.

Sometimes just pan fried (or is it braised if you cook it with chicken

stock?) liver with onions, bell peppers, garlic. Carmelized onions and bell

peppers are kind of sweet.

Maybe some others will have suggestions for kids. My primary told me once

to boil a bunch of spinach, toss it and drink the broth. Just keep it at a

simmer so it doesn't evaporate. I'm sure you'd want to add honey or

something--maybe make some type of popsicle with spinach juice--someone

recently posted recipes for popsicles.

Hope this helps, that is very low, isn't it? I've had three transfusions

(not since the SCD though) and my lowest hemoglobin was like 5ish. I'm not

sure if that's the same as ferritin (sp?). Good luck.
