Guest guest
Jerry, The only acid blocker that causes pancreatitis that I can find is PRILOSEC. Is says: Gastrointestinal: Pancreatitis (some fatal), Thats available over the counter and is cheaper than the prescription ones but who wants to take that chance! If you can find evidence of the others let me know as I will take my husband and son off of them. Sandy in Ca -------------- Original message -------------- Sometimes these new " acid blockers " exacerbate pancreatitis. If your pain levels get worse while on it, you should call your doc and discontinue its use.
Guest guest
Sandy, Yeah, it pays to look at adverse reactions and side effects of all the drugs we're prescribed. You never know when something will come back and bite you. I was on Prilosec for years before I had my pancreatitis diagnosis. A buddy of mine who is a pharmacist warned me about it after I was diagnosed. My doc told me that the type of problems I was having were not cause by a reaction to Prilosec. I trust him implicitly, so he must have been right. I had symptoms of pancreatitis irregularly for at least ten years before then anyway. The disease sort of crept up on me. I took a course of Zithromax (the antibiotic) three years ago for bronchitis and ended up spending a week in the hospital with a terrible attack. Some of you newbies might want to remember that, now that we are moving into the cold and flu season. I know I'm not the only guy who had that happen on Zithromax. It seems like Zithromax is getting to be the antibiotic of choice around here in NC. When it's prescribed for me I just flat-out refuse it. Antibiotics of all kinds can cause pancreatits. Be sure to check the manufacturer's fact sheet before taking anything. Bottom-line Sandy and everyone: ALWAYS, ALWAYS check the adverse reactions and side effects sections of the information sheet you receive with ANY drug. If you don't get the sheet the manufacturer supplies with the med, check it out on the drug's web site on the Internet or ask the pharmacist for one. They have tons of them laying around. DO NOT rely on the sheet the pharmacy prints-up and gives you with your prescription. Please go to the source the manufacturer supplies. It is very exhaustive most of the time and you should get a heads-up about any complications or conflicts. It never hurts to check drug interactions, either. You need to make sure a new drug that you are prescribed does cause a negative reaction with a drug you are already taking. The field is so vast now, that no one doctor can have command of it. You need to check it yourself. Hope This Helps, Jerry/NC ***************************************** > > Jerry, > > The only acid blocker that causes pancreatitis that I can find is > PRILOSEC. Guest guest
Jerry, I did not know about antibiotics causing pancreatitis! Right before I had my first attack, I was on a few rounds of them. SO does this mean they damage it permanently or can it calm down and go away? Or do they just flare up an already compromised pancreas? Interesting. Eileen
Guest guest
Jerry: You are correct about Zithromax. That is the brand name for azithromycin. All " mycin " drugs have a side effect of pancreatitis. I remember when Iw as first diagnosed with pancreatitis. I went back 6 monhts and looked into the ER visits 4 of them were for some kind of virus or infection where they had given me Zithromax and I would wind up in the hospital but at that time they did not know what was going on. Now we know. Sulfa drugs, and mycin drugs both cause pancreatitis as well as others.
