Guest guest
Hi, My son (5, ASD) just completed day 7 of SCD. I have had a few questions going through my mind for the past few days and was hoping someone here could help. First, my son had no stools for 2 days (on day 3&4 of SCD), then after that he has had formed stools (which he had previously anyway) that are really dark green (looked black, but was green when I wiped his bottom). Day 7 was the 3rd day for dark green stools. We started out the SCD trying the juice that Stan Kurtz talks about with pears, apples, and spinach in the Jack LaLanne juicer, but my son didn't want to drink it (Day 1). So I found some organic 100% grape juice from Trader Joes and gave that to him for days 2,3,4,&5. But I thought that the grape juice may be the cause for the dark stools since he has had probably 16 oz. a day. On days 6&7, I have started back the pear, apple, spinach juice and he is taking it a little bit better now. And on day 7 I gave him green beans for the first time. Any clues though why it is so green? Should I be concerned? Also, I was wondering about the length of time for cooking the veggies and fruits. Does it matter how long we boil them for? Can I steam cook the veggies and then use the water for steaming in the food processor to puree? My son actually prefers his food in puree form as he has many texture issues with food. So I use to steam the veggies before and puree for him prior to this diet. I have never done fruit this way, so this is a first. I have boiled the apples, pears and now peaches since I wasn't sure about steaming those. Is Trader Joe's " Organic Unsweetened Applesauce " SCD legal? The ingredients are Organic Apples from fresh, whole, triple washed, ripe organic apples. I hope so because this would save me some time on cooking the applesauce from scratch. Sorry for so many questions here. This has been an exhausting week for me with having to learn how to re-think cooking. And my poor little guy keeps asking me for cookie, chip, and raisin. He is asking for it less though as we go through the week. The first few days were difficult and it didnt' help that we were inside and it was hot here (So. Cal) with the fires all around and smoke filled the air. Ugh. (But very thankful to have a home to sit in and be hot in!) I am determined to give this diet a shot for a least a month and see if we notice some improvments over the GF/CF diet. Thanks for any advice :-) Mom to (5, ASD) SCD 7 days
Guest guest
Hi, , So glad to hear the fires have spared you. Did you choose to not do the intro diet for any particular reason? The best results on SCD happen when you start with the intro diet and then add one food at a time slowly, checking for reactions. (I can see that you did not do the intro diet from the foods you say you gave your son on Day 1.) The Trader Joe's grape juice is not legal. Very few commercial juices are legal. There is a list of legal juices at http://pecanbread.com/new/legalfoods1.html All juices must be diluted at least 50% with water. So if you plan a one-month trial of SCD please do not count the 7 days that have just gone by since you were using an illegal product. Here is a link to the intro diet: http://www.pecanbread.com/new/begindiet1.html The odd stool color is very common at the beginning of the diet as the bad bugs die and the body makes adjustments. The color may also have something to do with the grape and the spinach, especially if you didn't dilute. There is not a certain length of time to boil things, except carrots (4 hours). You want the fruits and vegetables to be quite soft. We say " well-cooked " . Steaming is fine. You can use the water to puree. The Trader Joe's applesauce is not legal. You have to make your own applesauce. There are very few commercial products that are SCD legal. mom to -12 SCd 4/23/
Guest guest
, Are you 100% sure that the Trader Joe's brand of Organic Grape Juice (not from concentrate) is not legal? The ingredients listed on the glass jar of the juice reads: Organic Concord Grapes. The front label reads " Trader Joe's Organic Pasteurized 100% Juice Concord Grape Juice. Made from fresh pressed Organic Concord Grapes " . Is it because the juice was pasteuriezed? I was trying to take the principals from the BTVC book and apply them in making my decision. My regular grocery store does not sell the Welch's brand of 100% grape juice. I was only able to find the " cocktail " versions, which of course also are concentrate. So the Trader Joe's brand was the closest thing that I could find. I just really want to make sure that this juice is absolutely illeagal before schleping off to yet another grocery store to find food for my kiddo. Also, I have noticed that the link that you gave me for the intro diet is a bit different than the intro diet described on BTVC web site. http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/the_intro_diet 2.htm Can you explain why the difference? > > Hi, , > So glad to hear the fires have spared you. > > Did you choose to not do the intro diet for any particular reason? > The best results on SCD happen when you start with the intro diet and > then add one food at a time slowly, checking for reactions. Guest guest
Hi, , Unfortunately, we cannot go by what is on the label. There is something called the " 2% rule " . Companies don't have to put anything on the label that is less than 2% of the contents. Since farming is weather dependent, not every batch of grapes is as sweet as every other and it's legal for companies to add some sugar or corn syrup to keep the flavor of their juice consistent and as long as the sugar or corn syrup is less than 2% of the contents, they don't have to list it. The manufacturing methods of the small number of legal juices were personally checked into by Elaine. She was satisfied that the methods used by these few companies would produce juice that was SCd legal. Undoubtedly there are other companies who do as well, but we don't know which ones they are. You can consider an additional product legal *if* you are able to get a hand-written letter on company letterhead that states what the ingredients are and that they do not ever add anything else. The intro diet on www.pecanbread.com is different from the intro diet on the BTVC site because it was tailored to kids on the autism spectrum. What that means is that all dairy has been removed from the pecanbread version of the intro diet and that many moms have put their heads together and created many food variations (such as chicken pancakes) that use only original intro diet foods, but are combined in new ways and may be more palatable to kids kids on the spectrum. mom to -12 SCd 4/23/
