NEW TO GROUP: CONSIDERING SCD DIET

Hi. My name is . I have a 5 yo daughter and a 4 yo son

with ASD. My son has been GFCFSF, nitrate, and color and flavor

free for 2 years and is doing wonderful. Not only does he have the

behavioral reactions to these foods but like many of the other

kiddos, he has significant GI changes. He used to be able to handle

small quantities of phenols (spaghetti sauce with pasta, or a box of

raisins), but his phenol sensivitity has since skyrocketed. Over

the course of 2 days he was given a box of raisins at school. Boy,

have I paid the price at home. I have never seen the child so out

of control. He is running around the house, making these awful

backthroat sounds, laughing like a drunk sailor, and is constantly

spitting up and swishing.

In SEptember he got some type of virus and I literally watched it

migrate up his body. It was really weird. The little guy has not

been the same since. Now he has horrible yeast and I feel this has

created his extreme sensitivity to phenols. His diet is so limited

right now.

I bought BTVC over a year ago and read but was advised by my sons

chiro that it was extremely difficult to implement and more children

react positively to the GFCF diet. I am currently reading Pangborn

and Bakers Biomedical book and they recommend the SCD diet. With

Jacks yeast issues I am considering changing.

The diet sounds difficult to implement but that does not bother me,

being GFCFSF and everything else feel has been pretty hard too. I

just want to make sure I am doing the diet correctly from the

beginning. YOu moms that switched from GFCF to SCD, did you do the

SCD while maintaining GFCF? Did you eventually transition to only

SCD? How did you handle school snacks? My sons school is a nut

free zone and they don't bend. That is a stickler, huh? WE also do

probiotics, enzymes, licorice root for immune support, and

currently THreelac for yeast die-off. Do you maintain supplements?

What kind of reactions did you see in your children? Since you are

still doing the diet, I assume they are favorable. What behaviors

did you see this diet to be the most effective with? My son is

verbal, has good eye contact, and pretty high-functioning. He has a

lot of sensory problems, auditory processing issues, hyperactivity,

and tends to gets very panicked very quickly.

I guess I can get longwinded in my posts. Sorry! I would love to

hear your stories and advice about transitioning to this diet. I

want to be well versed in SCD before I make the change so that it

can be a smooth change for everyone. Thanks!

Hi ,

Hi ,

Welcome to the group! Your chiropractor was wrong, more children

react positively to the SCD diet than to the GFCF diet.

GFCF leader Karyn Seroussi once made a study to compare the two

diets and SCD won! I am too busy this morning to find the link to the

post that proves this but I am willing to send the link this afternoon

anyone who asks for it in private email.

I want to explain why Dairy Free SCD is better than

GFCFSF or GFCF for children with ASD.

When a child does Dairy Free SCD, he is following a diet that is

gluten free, casein free, soy free. He is therefore getting all the advantages

of GFCFSF or GFCF.

I do agree that gluten, soy and casein from cow milk do have an adverse

effect on children with ASD. This was proven by a research paper written by

Jyanouchi. What was most interesting was that it was found that these reactions

might be due to LPS, a very common bacterial toxin. This bacterial

toxin (LPS) is capable

of inducing most of the symptoms of autism. All these research

articles about LPS and ASD are found in the following website:

www.microbialinfluence.com

Since most of the symptoms of ASD are due to bacterial toxins, it

makes sense to do a diet that starves the pathogenic bacteria.

Eliminating gluten, casein and soy only eliminates some of the symptoms.

We usually recommend that children who did GFCF prior to SCD wait for

a few months prior to trying the SCD goat dairy. Elaine believed in

waiting for about a month....others believe in 3 months. The goal is

to start the dairy after the die off reaction to dairy free SCD has

gone away so that you can assess the reaction from the goat yogurt.

Doing the SCD yogurt doubles the speed of healing on SCD. The yogurt

making process changes the structure of the casein and makes it

harmless. Please read the yogurt section of our website:

Hi, ,

Here is a post about nut-free school snacks:

Yes, many of us give our kids supplements. You'll have to look over

your probiotics, enzymes, and supplements and see if they are legal on

th SCD. I know Threelac and licorice are illegal. Here is a list of

some legal supplements:

Hi, ,

If you go to the archives and read old posts, you will learn a lot. I

did a search for the word " update " which people sometimes use to tell

us of their progress. Here's one example posted by Alana after two

weeks. Keep in mind that not everyone has dramatic results after two

weeks. My son 's progress, for example, has simply been slow and

steady (except for a severe setback of about a year due to a chelation

challenge ordered by the doctor because my husband wanted to know if we

could stop SCD.) :(
