Guest guest
Kaye, In April, just after taking a round of zithromax, I had a flare of pancreatitis with both my amylase and lipase elevated for the first time in over a year. Typically, at this point, only my liver enzymes elevate with my flares. I ended up being in the hospital for 12 days (one of my longest stays) and even ended up having my hemoglobin drop to 6.7 and had to be given two units of blood. My GI told me to stay away from erythromycin and try to stick mainly to amoxicillin for infections. I am severely allergic to sulfa drugs since childhood so I don't have to worry about them. To further complicate things, I am at a greatly increased risk for infection because I have an IgG deficiency and I am on Imuran to suppress my immune system to keep my autoimmune liver disease under control. I had sepsis the end of June and was on antibiotics for about a month with that. I had several flares during that time but sepsis will kill you if not treated promptly and aggressively, so we just dealt with the flares. There are so many drugs that are known to cause pancreatitis, but sometimes those drugs just cannot be avoided. However, if there is any other option, it is best to steer clear of those drugs known to cause pancreatitis. W
