Is this forever?

Hi there!

I, my 6 year old and my 3 year old have been SCD dairy free for over a

year and a half. We are doing well, although any time the pollen

kicks up in spring or fall, we all start reacting to more stuff

(everything from clothes detergent to certain legal foods). I was

just curious... will this be our forever diet? My husband often

pushes me to try rice or potatoes with the kids, but I hesitate since

my 6 year old goes downhill so quickly every pollen season. It makes

me think her immune system is still pretty shaky.

Thanks so much,

Heidi

Heidi,

The answer is, " It depends. " Mostly on the

individual. For myself, I still try to stay 100%

SCD because infractions lead to issues. (I tried

a non-legal orange juice on my recent trip, had

diarrhea, and my husband went out and bought

Tropicana for me. But the one episode was all I

had whereas in times past, I'd've had problems

for several weeks after an infraction.)

On the other hand, my niece has been able to add

potatoes, once a week, and rice pasta, once a week, to her otherwise SCD diet.

I can't do that.

So, it depends. For myself, I'm content to live

without the potatoes and pasta. <g> I admit to

missing N'Awlins style French bread, which just

can't be made with almond flour, but I can tell

you I don't miss not having the diarrhea and feeling lousy all the time!

If you and yours are still having allergy issues,

I wouldn't try adding non-legal foods back in yet. Trust your instincts.

Thanks Martha!

It is hard sometimes to know what to say when my husband wonders

aloud WHEN will I allow my kids to branch out a bit? Now that I'm

used to the diet, I'll probably stay pretty strict my whole life. I

had surgery recently (endometriosis) and a friend brought some

veggies over - I ate some even though I noticed that canned tomatoes

had been added. Ug. Problems. But, as you noted, the problems

lasted 2 days rather than 2 weeks. I'd love to try my kids on rice

and potatoes, but I'm just too scared to mess up all the progress.

My 6 year old got a bit of bread last summer and spent 8 weeks with

a low grade fever and asthma symptoms. When she is stressed out (a

lot now that school has started), she gets migraines and starts

reacting to tomatoes. I guess I sort of feel that if the stress of

school and pollen is enough to mess with her right now, then I

shouldn't be adding anything illegal. It's nice to hear about your

niece though - maybe someday.....
