Guest guest
Okay, I will try to keep this short and not sound crazed. I'm basically at my whit's end. It has been beyond rough since early in the 3rd month SCD. I put him back on the intro 2 times to help with it. He's been sick with a sinus/cough type bug which set us back due to meds (all pills, no liquid) he had to take. He had food allergy testing that made his behavior worse again. Now I just don't know what to do. I know Elaine wanted you to give you child as much variety as possible as long as there is no deadly reactions. He is incredibly sensitive to sal.'s. They give him bad tics, make him defiant, uncooperative, a nervous wreck, lack focus etc. The food allergies (or any kind of histamine reaction) makes him hyper, spacey, out of control, lack focus. I have tried some enzymes for the sal situation, but haven't seen the overall improvement at all I don't think. All these other happenings may have masked that. Oh and the 2nd time I took him back to the intro and reintroduced the foods slowly as I should, he lost 10 lbs, (He's only 8 and weighed only 65 lbs before losing weight.) I can't get his weight up, can't get his behavior under control and can't get him back to doing school regularly either. He's tired of eating the same foods (and frankly I don't blame him. I can't get him to finish a meal anymore. It's not that he's not hungry, he just doesn't want to eat the same foods over and over again. He needs a HUGE amount of calories to just keep his weight up and although he eats large portions (when I can get him to eat) I just can't keep it up. I can't do much variety because of the food allergies and sal intolerance. I'm just not good enough to be so patient and deal with his behavior. He makes me want to leave home and never come back. That's a horrible thing to say, but I just can't deal with it. Everyone that knows us or is near us (including my husband) can't deal with him and don't understand how I do. He does get a tiny bit of yogurt everyday. I'm hoping I can see some healing sometime and maybe this will get better, but it's going so slowly and as long as he won't eat enough, he'll keep losing weight and being sick and won't go to the next grade. I hate that because he is so smart. I can't quit this diet - there are no other options and no but I can deal with him <it's obvious I don't do that very well either>. I really don't know what to do or how to keep going. I'm literally wearing out my hands and wrists preparing all his food. He eats well over $300 in groceries every month by himself. Now this is buying everything at the absolute most savings. With all that, he still can't gain weight. Guest guest
How stressful this must be for you, Bonita. I hope we can come up with a good plan for you. I'm glad you've started the yogurt; it can do great things. Could you give him a reward of something he would really like if he finishes all of his " boring " food? And since I just can't keep the sal list in my mind, so could you please post a list of the foods you know he does not react badly to? Then we can see how we could help you make them more interesting. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Hi Bonita, What foods is he eating now and what foods does he seem to do best with? What kinds of foods does he like best - sauces (like homemade applesauce, pearsauce) crisp foods (crackers etc...) Which foods has he had the worst sal reactions to? Guest guest
He seems to do okay with all the meats (chicken, beef, pork). He prefers the chicken and carrots together pureed. He doesn't really like really hard things. He has no problem eating chicken and pork chops in chunks though. He prefers his veggies cooked really soft. He loves smoothies. He LOVES pearsauce. He likes the muffin type bread/veggie type things. He HATES chicken pancakes. Crackers are about the only crunchy food he really likes. It's hard to tell what sal's he reacts the most to. He can't have more than 1 sal in any small portion at all in a meal. Combining any of the spices with any other sal. Tomatoes seem to be a real problem, but it may be them mixed with any of the spices. I really don't know how to cook them without any other sals. Olive oil is very problematic, but he is allergic to green olives and they are very high in sals. Coconut oil seems to be problematic also, but I'm not sure. Eggs were fine in the beginning and they are becoming a problem, but minor. I think they will be okay in baked goods. He hasn't tried many of the dark green, leafy veggies. Spinach seemed to extremely problematic. I don't know if he's allergic to that also or not. He's not been tested for it. Grape anything is a real bad problem (sal, don't know about allergy). I use garlic, salt and a little bit of pepper and lemon juice to spice my meats and chicken. I know for sure his is actually, truly allergic to green olives, yellow squash, strawberries, avocados, peanuts, almonds, brazil nuts, filberts, English walnuts, pistachios. I know he's NOT allergic to tomato (just sal problem there), cashews, coconut (just sal problem), pecans, black walnuts, onion (sal prob), green peppers (sal), carrot, egg (some new intolerance developing, but not major when eaten in small amounts), garlic, vanilla, onion (sal prob), banana, lemon, pineapple (haven't tried them since going on SCD), watermelon (sal prob). Also, as a reinforcement, I really don't know how to try some of the sals (spices, onions, oils) in small amounts just by themselves. It seems they have to be combined in most recipes that I know of (my knowledge is limited). I'm still trying more enzymes to see if they help more. I also want to do more allergy testing in January next year for things I don't know about like cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, black pepper. My ins pays the testing in full (rare thing) so I may retest in another 6 months to see if he's still allergic to some of the foods. I hope this gives enough info to answer your questions so maybe you guys can come up with some ideas, maybe. Let me know if some info was missing. Guest guest
Hi, Bonita, Thanks for all the details. You don't have to give spices, onions, oils, etc. in small amounts by themselves. You can give them in small amounts in foods he already tolerates. I think you need to try some fats to find out how he tolerates them. Since he loves smoothies, put some good fat in a smoothie. If no bad reaction, increase the amount. Many parents hide good fats in smoothies. Patti has recommended walnut and sunflower oils as being good and mild flavored. Another parent recommended rice bran oil (yes, it is legal because it is an oil) as having no taste and being good to add to foods. When you find a fat he tolerates, add it to various foods throughout the day. You can drizzle oil on veggies and cook meats in oils and keep adding oils to the smoothies. Put oil in this pureed chicken and carrots. Offer baked goods with pecans since he tolerates them. Would he like the Mixed Nut Flatbread made up as pancakes and topped with pearsauce? Add a little oil to the batter and put oil on your griddle as well. Have you tried ghee (clarified butter)? Ghee has the casein removed and is only fat. He might enjoy ghee on his pancakes and veggies. If you find that he can have ghee and palm shortening, substitute ghee for the butter in the " Real Frosting " recipe posted by Ellen http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/71604 and add frosting to his muffins. Since he can have bananas, I would give him 2-3 every day. If he will eat it, leave the skin on chicken for extra calories. You can try Kalamata olives. I don't see winter squash listed anywhere. There are many varieties that could add calories in a smoothie, in squash pie (like pumpkin pie), in baked goods, and just by itself with salt, pepper, and ghee. Would you be willing to try goat cheddar? Adding cheese to foods adds lots of calories. One parent gave the idea that after 30 minutes, if the child is not eating well, set a timer for one hour and then try again. This would give you a break in the eating struggle. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/

I have a 7 y/o with ASD who was on the diet over 2 years and is now tolerating very limited amounts of illegal foods (sweet and white potatoes, sugar and brown rice) and doing very well gi-wise and other - Yea!! Anyway, I just started my almost 2 y/o son on the diet (he has always been GFCF) several weeks ago for gi issues and some developmental concerns. I certainly don't want to add to your stress- level but wanted to share that my older son who had severe salicylate and phenol-issues (in the beginning - not now!) could not tolerate bananas - they are very high in phenols which I think are related to salicylates. Anyway, I notice your son eats them and wondered if you had ever tried omitting them for a week to see if he does better without them? The great thing with this diet is that after time (a year or more) he didn't have the food allergy and salicylate issues as much - so it really will pay off in the end, but can be very challenging in the beginning. Hope this helps - I have learned so much from others along the way. R. - 2 y/o with gi issues on diet for 2 1/2 weeks, 7 y/o ASD - 2+ yrs on diet

Guest guest
, Yes he can have fish. He loves it. He also loves the chicken, lemon, ghee and garlic in a pan. I'll have to try the pineapples with chicken. I haven't been brave enough for them. I haven't tried the apples yet. After a while you get gun shy. That does sound interesting with the apple, carrot and chicken. He wasn't able to deal with onions when I tried them last. I may try putting just a tad bit of onion powder as seasoning on my chicken for starters. I've been wanting to try something sweet with with pork. Do you just put them together in a skillet or crock pot? I usually cook my pork loin in the crock pot with garlic, salt and water. I put salt, pepper and garlic on my boneless pork loin chops and pan fry in a tad bit of ghee. Guest guest
Hi Bonita, Onion powder is not legal as it contains starch as an anti-caking agent. As an alternative, you can dehydrate fresh onion and grind it. --- Bonita Todd wrote: > tried them last. Guest guest
Sorry, I should have said homemade onion powder. That's what I meant. I have had some ground up for a while. Thanks for the correction though. Bonita Re: Re: diet crisis Hi Bonita, Onion powder is not legal as it contains starch as an anti-caking agent. Guest guest
the crock pot would be great with the pork and pineapple. you can also take ground turkey for burgers and mix some grated apple into it when forming the patties. you can boil down some peeled peaches and apricots and honey and serve over cooked chicken. for fish: chop an onion, 1 pound of fish minced up fine (whatever he likes), 1 egg, 2 spoons of honey, salt pepper. cook the onion in a fry pan, then mix everything together and form small balls. fry and serve. this is adapted from a recipe book I have. I've looked thru my pile of recipes but not that many are ok for him. This is the best I could find! I hope he likes them. - -- In pecanbread , " Bonita Todd " wrote: > > , > > Yes he can have fish. Cashews seem to be low, but are a starchier nut. If he has any bowel problems now you may want to replace cashew for now with an easier to digest nut like pecan (best option) or hazelnuts (blanched). <<<<Also, as a reinforcement, I really don't know how to try some of the sals (spices, onions, oils) in small amounts just by themselves. Guest guest
Bonita, How stressful for you... Can you use coconut flour? I don't know if this is on the sal list? i've been experimenting with coconut flour for a while and making muffins and it seems to work well. You can google coconut flour recipes. I'm glad you're doing the goat yogurt, can you give him probiotics in the goat yogurt? I think the goat yogurt has been most beneficial for my son and now i add all the other probiotics as well. I've also been giving him coco-biotic and cultured juices, they are SCD compliant and seem to be beneficial too. My son can handle the coco-biotic straight (it tastes a bit like sparkling water) but i usually dilute the cultured juice 1:3 (1 part water, 1 part pear juice and 1 part cultured juice). Thanks Raj > > > > Okay, I will try to keep this short and not sound crazed. > > > > I'm basically at my whit's end. It has been beyond rough since > > early in the 3rd month SCD. It is made from illegal green coconuts, contains some questionable strains, malt, oats, corn wheat, rye etc.. You could try making coconut milk yogurt instead. Guest guest
I just wanted to say (a little belated I know) thanks to EVERYONE of you who sent reply with ideas, encouragement and suggestions. They were all so helpful. I had actually forgotten some of the things I thought he was okay with before SCD. I hadn't reintroduced them since. The was a good jump-start and reminder. I am going to steer closer to the things I KNOW he is not allergic to and experiment more. I think the allergies may be why it has been so difficult. I can work on the sal problem with enzymes, but they were compounding with the allergies that I have to deal with in a different way. Thanks all for the help.
