I've been nursing Sailor for 18 months, and I'm convinced that he'd be

far more delayed if I hadn't. There would be no formula that he would

not be sensitive to. Until recently, I'd been GF/CF, soy, corn, egg,

everything free, and so was my son, but he had only improved a bit.

The SCD (for both of us) has really helped him with socialization,

verbal skills, and with his GI issue of constipation.

I don't think I could put him on a diet that I was not on, as well.

It wouldn't seem fair.

" is there a formula that would be

as good a breast milk? (as far a gut issues?) ? "

Absolutely nothing but nothing is even close to breast milk regarding almost any

health issue. Esp. with gut issues, filling your child's sensitive GI system

with whey or soy proteins and artificial sweeteners is definitely starting down

the wrong path. Even if it is difficult for you to be on the diet as well, it

will likely be a whole lot less painful than dealing with more severe GI issues

in your child later on.

Good luck.

thanks for the response...I was wondering if the lactose in Mom's milk would be

a problem for digestion...as I noted in the BTVC book the formula was there for

a monosaccride

milk supplement....and it said something like until a monosaccride formula

could be

prescribed.???? Of coarse Nursing was not a part of the discussion.in the

book....both of

my children became ill, GUT, allergies, and infections when Nursing was

terminated....and

Autistic symptoms for my son began....Now have a grandaughter 3

months...having difficulty

with digesting even breast milk as did my son at the same age....I am

encouraging her to

follow the SCD diet herself.....this of coarse I didn't know about 30 years

ago....hope it helps....I myself am very pro-nursing....and a ped. nurse also

Hi a,

From my limited understanding of breastfeeding I think it depends on

the state of the intestines in the baby. The enzymes needed for

digesting lactose are in the small intestine and if there is a GI

problem (antibiotics, gastroenetritis etc..) there may be a

reduction (partial or complete) reduction in lactase. If the mom

goes on SCD and eats foods that don't seem to bother the baby then

the gut heals. As long as the mom eats easy to digest SCD foods at

first and gradually increase it seems (as reported by breastfeeding

SCD moms) that the babies then tolerate the breastmilk. (I'd love

input from those who know more on this topic)
