Low Oxalate Diet

Hello Everyone,

I just want to let you know that I was doing GFCF for two years and SCD for

about a year and a half. I started two-three weeks ago on the Low Oxalate Diet

and my son no longer has the distended belly, chronic constipation, and stomach

aches. I was tired for fleet enemas, suppositories, and Emergency rooms.

He was sensitive to all nuts, beans, spinach, tapioca, tomato, soy and other

fruits and vegetables high on oxalate.

I just want people to know that there is another diet out there that may work

for their kids on the autism spectrum.

Within three days on the diet, he goes to the bathroom on his own without

suppositories and fleet enemas and continues to do so. It is a relief to

discover the piece of the puzzle for my son's comfort. He is happy these days.

Thanks,

Kathrina

Kathrina,

Yes, there are lots of other diets out there:-) The LOD is rather recent

SCD has a very high success rate and is based on excellent science almost a half

century

old. The LOD diet has not been around for ASD long enough to assess long term

results

and effects. The VSL#3 on the LOD is hard on the gut. Please check out this

group about

the Vitamin K protocol for high oxalates

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/VitaminK/?yguid=127073442

Here is how SCD addresses some oxalate issues.

SCD Goat Yogurt is a Powerful Treatment for Lowering Oxalate Values

Shaw, director of the Great Plains Laboratory has been testing oxalates

for years.

Shaw reports that arabinose, ( a marker used for yeast/fungal overgrowth on the

organic

acid test for years) is correlated with high amounts of oxalates. Arabinose is

also an

important fuel for oxalate production. Candida organisms have been discovered

surrounding oxalate stones in the kidney. " This establishes three good reasons

for the

importance of following SCD and using home incubated yogurt.

Research articles about how yogurt can decrease candida:

Shalev E., et al. Ingestion of Yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus

compared with

pasteurized yogurt as prophylaxis for recurrent candidal vaginitis and bacterial

vaginosis.

Arch Fam Med. 1996 Nov-Dec; 5(10):593-6.

McLean NW, Rosenstein IJ, Characterization and selection of Lactobacillus

species to re-

colonize the vagina of women with recurrent bacterial vaginosis. J Med.

Microbiol 2000

Jun;49(6):543-52.

Isenberg, H, et al. Ingestion of Yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus as

prophylaxis

for Candida Albicans. Ann Intern Med. 1992 Mar;116(5)353-7.

Actually our list guidelines frown on supporting other diets here as this list

is dedicated to

SCD

Naturally, despite that, we are happy for your child's success thus far.

Hi Kathrina,

I am glad to hear that your son is doing better.

We are very aware of the Low Oxalate Diet. There have been a few reports

about kids who improved when they added the Low Oxalate Diet to SCD

and combined

both diets. One reason for this is the fact that nuts and beans are

difficult to digest. Parents who add the Low Oxalate Diet to SCD

might see improvements because nuts and most beans are forbidden by

the Low Oxalate Diet.

The most common SCD mistake is to give children nuts and beans before their guts

have improved. If you eliminate the difficult to digest foods then you

will see improvements. Parents who remain SCD but who redo their diet

and eliminate beans, nuts and other difficult to digest foods will see

dramatic improvement.

If the Low Oxalate Diet only forbade nuts and beans then I would

endorse it enthusiastically because it would

prevent parents from giving our kids these difficult to digest foods

before gut healing had taken place. Unfortunately, the Low Oxalate

Diet also forbids many fruits and veggies. These fruits and veggies

contain so many healthy nutrients!

If parents have difficulties getting great results with SCD, then they

should seek the help of SCD counselors before jumping into other

diets. The supplements that are required by the Low Oxalate Diet are

more expensive than SCD counseling. There are other advantages to

staying with SCD. Parents should investigate other diets very

thoroughly before making the switch.

Parents should get together with other parents to assess the Low

Oxalate Diet. There is a special Yahoo Group

for this purpose:
