Guest guest
Our almost 3 yr. old daughter has been on SCD since Sept. with NO cheating. She went from very loose and smelly stools to well formed ones. We were on a roll! Then a week ago she got sick. We had to give her Tylenol to bring the fever down. We had to give her cough medicine for her cough. She was too sick to eat or drink much and she had HORRIBLE mouth sores. I made the chicken soup and gave her the broth. She would suck on frozen fruit. She ate little, but it was all LEGAL except for the medicine. Our SCD Dr. told us to give her the meds as she had a high fever and needed it. I discussed the fact that she would be getting illegals and he said we had to get the fever down and I agreed. During the week she was sick she could not eat the yogurt or take her digestive enzymes as it hurt her mouth sores. She now has smelly loose stools again and I am discouraged. Is it normal to have setbacks when a child is sick? She is on the mend but her stools are bad again. How long can I expect this? Any advice? I was wondering if I could give her the adult tylenol in the long pill form and use a pill cutter for the right dosage and then crush it? Is there any legal cough or fever medicine out there? Everything I found has some form of sweetner in it. Her gas and tummy problems are back with a vengence! Thanks, Beth
Guest guest
Yes, you can use plain adult Tylenol tablets and crush them, as long as you know what her dosage in mgs needs to be. I've done this for years with my daughter, to avoid the sugars, red coloring and preservatives. For coughs, use this: 2 T honey... plus 1/4 tsp of powdered ginger (the kind you bake with). Mix well. Give 1/2 to 1 tsp.. right off the spoon, or mixed in warm lemonade, as needed. Spicy, but most kids like it. Works really well, especially on croupy coughs. The ginger opens up passages. This was given to me by an RN who got the recipe from her grandfather, who was an old-fashioned country doctor, back in the 1920's and '30's. Keep up the chicken soup (with garlic!) and the Electrolyte Drink! After she's better, you may want to do a day of Intro to get back on track. Don't worry... just move forward. Contact your local pharmacy and ask how much of an adult pill for her weight and age. If they ask tell her the ingredients in the child tylenol make her stomach sick (not an exaggeration) <<<<Is there any legal cough or fever medicine out there?>>>> I haven't heard of any legal ones. I used honey and ginger when my kids have coughs. If they had high fevers I did give them fever reducers. I have also read that rubbing peppermint oil on the soles of the foot help reduce fevers ( i haven't tried this one yet) I have also read that for stuffed up noses and coughs that vicks vapourub on the bottom of the feet then covered by socks also help breathing at night. I'll be trying that this winter with the kiddies. <<<< Everything I found has > some form of sweetner in it. For the cold, eating a diet close to the easy-to-digest intro will help clear up the cold by supplying her body with nutrients that will strengthen her immune system and give her a gut a break and allow it to heal. If her symtoms don't start to improve as her cough and cold improves please let us know and we'll make some suggestions to help get her back on track. Guest guest
The peppermint oil does work! Sounds odd, but it is very effective. I have found I may have to use a little fever reducer at night but only rarely and during the day the oil on the feet has been enough. We have been using this method for a few years. I was amazed when we first tried it. plus they get minty smelling tootsies!
