Introducing Pork Rinds

Hi All

We are 5 weeks into SCD & my son will still only drink smoothies -

however, he did show interest in a bag of plain pork rinds he saw at

the grocery store. Would it be too soon to introduce them? We are

introducing one new fruit or vegetable from the stages per week but we

are still in stage one. He loves the smoothies (proportions: 2 c

cooked, grinded chicken or pork, 2 c BTVC applesauce, 2 c 4 hour

carrots, 2 c cooked spinach/french-cut green beans/ or zucchini, 2

bananas, & enough legal juice to thin it out). I was hoping that if we

could introduce the pork rinds & he liked them, he may start eating the

solid versions of the foods in his smoothies....

Thanks in advance!!

This is just my opinion, as an SCD counselor...

I know that pork rinds are supposedly legal, but I personally have not EVER seen

a kid do well on SCD if pork rinds were being consumed. I always tell all my

private clients to consider them completely illegal. I just can't recommend them

at ALL... for ANYone... no matter how long they've been on SCD.

my two cents...

Pork rinds make my acid reflux act up. We did them once and the twins had a

HORRIBLE :( day. Try making some frozen treats to get him to accept

different, crunchier foods. We always made a new food introduction fun with

a party or a picnic infront of the TV My boys love having their grandma

over so we sometimes introduced new food with her eating it first.

Thank you Patti and Cindy for your responses regarding the pork

rinds! The pork rinds were left by someone in the check-out lane &

of course he spotted them so I bought them because I had remembered

seeing them listed as legal on the BTVC site but Daddy didn't know

that I wanted to inquire about them & gave him about 3 or 4 rinds

while I was gone with our daughter to Daisy group. So do either one

of you with more experience suggest that he go back to the intro for

a few days or just move forward from this infraction? And Patti, do

you think we could benefit from an SCD counselor such as yourself for

the issue of him refusing solids? Although I haven't minded, & don't

mind to continue, but I have tried EVERYTHING to get him to get him

to " eat " ...every recipe allowable from the different SCD sites (BTVC,

pecan bread, SCDiet.org, ect: sneaky pancakes/buttons/popcicles,

individual items, you name it!!) with the items from stage one,

introducing one per week - as well as even offering prizes

(inexpensive small cars from the Dollar General) & beloved activities

(trampoline time, etc). I almost hate to worry about the smoothies,

especially when I remind myself that he is eating soooooo much better

than he did on the GFCF diet for over a year (please refer to recipe

in original post)!!!!

Thanks for everyone's support & advise!!

Behaviour was always the best indicator for us as to whether or not we went

back on the intro diet. If they didnt seem to react, then I just

continued. Not too sure what to make of the smoothie ordeal. Did he always

eat smoothies when he was on the GFCF diet too. Maybe in time as the diet

works its magic as it did for us he will slowly return to more solid like

foods. Is you entire family on the diet? I think when our family was on

board my guys decided they wanted to eat what we ate. You can try bulking up

his smoothies a bit at a time if you want build upwards. Not too sure on

this one. I am on the opposite end of this as I would love for my guys to

take smoothies so I can get more into them, but alas, they dont really like

smoothies. I am actually thinking of a smoothie party to get them on board.

Oh the things we do. :)

Good luck

Christy,

No, I don't think you need to go back to Intro. This is not a major

infraction... they aren't " illegal " ... just not recommended (by me, anyway!).

You can contact me off list if you want more info on private counseling... but

really, at this point, my best advice is not to worry. I think after more time

goes by and you get significant gut healing going on, he will be more likely to

accept new foods and textures.... we see that happen all the time.

You're still pretty early on and like you said, what he's eating right now is so

much healthier. I'd just relax and keep trying.... but no pressure, no

stressing. I have tips for how to get a really crispy cookie.... and they

freeze really well... and are super right out of the freezer. Maybe he'd like

that? Lemme know if you want the recipe.

Most of all, just pat yourself on the back for doing such a great job and don't

worry. It WILL get better with time.

Patti
