Guest guest
I'm posting this for a friend, some of you helped her out this summer. I am desperate for answers. I feel overwhelmed with worry and feel I can't rest until my baby is better again. This is going to be long...I'm sorry...I just don't know where to turn to for help. My doctor has no knowledge of yeast problems and other people usually think I just need to give the baby medicine. The original symptoms the baby was having included the following: very few bowel movements, stomach pain, gas, spitting up, constant crying, cradle cap, baby acne, and stuffiness. I have been doing the SCD since May and am still avoiding all dairy (i.e. cheese and yogurt...I still eat eggs and butter). We had been doing pretty well and there was definite improvement. Then we got caught in a terrible cycle in the last two months where I made mistakes from plain ignorance. I think the start of it was I made b-b-q sauce and ketchup with the wrong brand of tomato juice. I used Del Monte and then found out later that we are only supposed to use Cambell's. Then because the baby's tummy hurt, she stopped eating as much - my milk supply dropped and I began taking More Milk Plus to increase my milk supply. We both seemed to have problems and then I realized it has grain alcohol in it, which I'm guessing is illegal- is that correct? Then I thought she was teething and about a month ago I bought some Children's Teething drops by NatroBio and gave that to her. I noticed she was in more pain and finally looked up info on their web site and found that it has a type of sugar in it (not listed on the box). I cut that out two weeks ago but last week she went for four days without a bowel movement (Mon. - Thurs.) She had a lot of gas, was spitting up, developed a terrible diaper rash (first time for that symptom), was very irritable, didn't want to eat and was arching her back. On Thursday I gave her a Baby Lax (glycerin) enema. She had one bowel movement that evening, and three bowel movements on Friday. She was the happiest child on Friday...she slept for 8 hours that night (first time in a month). Her rash disappeared almost immediately. She pooped on Saturday, but seemed gassy again and a bit irritable. I gave her some Hyland's teething gel - it does not have sugar- I checked- and I put a pea size amount on her gums. On Sunday she had quite a bit of gas, a bit of spit up, frequent night waking and was arching her back again. She did not have a bowel movement on Monday (yesterday). Today she did have a bowel movement and seemed a bit better, but still very gassy and woke up all night last night. I know this is detailed, but I'm hoping it will give you a better idea about what is happening and maybe what I can do. Since she seemed better for two days and is now acting a bit worse, I'm afraid that there is something else in my diet that is affecting her...it's been almost two weeks since she had her (supposed) last " bad " stuff...shouldn't she be better by now? Now, onto what I'm eating. I was doing very well too until I started those More Milk drops - then I had side pain as well, and that disappeared as soon as I stopped taking the drops. I have felt bloated pretty often throughout the past two months which I attributed to an increase in fruit consumption. My midwife told me that eating lots of fruit would help my milk supply (since I'm on such a restricted diet), so I eat about 3-5 servings per day. It seemed that when I had the most milk, I was the most bloated. I read online that calcium supplements can help with milk supply during the second two weeks of your menstrual cycle and since I started my period two months ago, I wondered if hormones could be affecting my supply. I ordered the SCD calcium supplements about two weeks ago and started taking those every day. I noticed that during the past week and a half my bowel movements have become hard (sorry for so much info!) and my hemorroids have come back. Today I am feeling very bloated again and I actually haven't had much fruit for the past two days. My diet usually consists of: Apples Peanut butter (365 brand from whole foods) Grapes Watermelon Tropicana OJ Eggs Cinn. cookies (Lucy's) Frozen chicken breasts (coated with ice) from Trader Joes 's Lean Beef ground beef Frozen peas Frozen green beans Sometimes some celery, onions and red pepper in meatloaf Herbs, lemons and white wine for cooking I just added avacado a few days ago I take the SCD multi-vitamin, the SCD calcium supplement and Custom Probiotics dairy free Acidophilus in powder form, mixed with water. A bit of a clue to me though is that when speaking to a lactation consultant yesterday, she asked if the baby's stool was hard when it came out after the enema...it wasn't...it was a wet blowout. She said that is not considered constipation...her failure to have a bowel movement is from a peristalsis problem. Makes sense since that was my biggest symptom when I started this diet several years ago. However, right now, my bowel movements are just hard- constipation- not the usual symptom I get from eating something wrong. Since I am constipated, but the baby is experiencing problems with the muscle contractions in the gut...maybe I'm not eating something wrong...maybe the problems in Elise are from the teething stuff. Now...here is my list of questions...I'm hoping you have some insight! -How long does it generally take for the gut to heal and normal pooping patterns (without so much gas pain) to return? (When I first started this diet a couple years ago I had improvement almost immediately and I thought I started pooping normally really quickly) -Do you think that Elise is just still healing and that I'm not still eating something bad? -Is grain alcohol illegal? -Is there something in Hyland's teething Gel that is illegal? (I'll list the ingredients at the end of the e-mail...I checked pecanbread.com for illegal/ legal supplements and couldn't find all the ingredients) -Is Tropicana OJ (original) still considered legal? -Is 365 brand (whole foods) peanut butter still legal? -Is Trader Joe's Pure Bourbon vanilla extract OK to use? -Are Muir Glenn organic canned whole tomatoes still legal? (Elise had problems after I ate those) -Could the calcium supplements be causing my hardened stool? -Could the extra fruit be causing my bloating, or is it something illegal in my diet? -Could Elise be sensitive to acidic foods? Perhaps it was the acidic tomato, not something illegal that caused her problems...maybe the OJ is causing problems now? Any other insights or thoughts would be appreciated! Again, I'm sorry for asking you to analyze so much...I just don't know where else to turn for help. Thank you, Noelle Frazier Hyland's Teething Gel ingredients:calcium phosphate, Chamomile, Coffee, Belladonna (alkaloids) in a natural gel base of deionized water, vegetable glycerin, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl paraben, propyl paraben. --------------------------------- Be a better sports nut! Guest guest
I don't know enough about what's going on with this baby... how old? What's the diagnosis, etc? But I can make a couple of comments... Number one, if I were you (the mom), given the symptoms you have, I would immediately go back to all peeled and cooked foods..... as simple as possible. NO premade foods... only homemade. I would also immediately remove peanut butter ..... completely. I would not recommend using it again until both of you are doing MUCH, MUCH better. It should be considered a very advanced food. <<I ordered the SCD calcium supplements about two weeks ago and started taking those every day. I noticed that during the past week and a half my bowel movements have become hard >> Calcium can be very constipating. I personally can't recommend calcium supplements.... as I just feel food sources are best and that suppelmental calcium can be a big problem for MOST people. My opinion only. If you don't do dairy, do almonds, leafy greens, nuts, etc. <<Is there something in Hyland's teething Gel that is illegal?>> I can't say whether those ingredients are legal or not. I wouldn't use it if I were you. Teething is really difficult... my daughter had a rough time, too. Always. I'm not sure what to suggest, as we never really found anything that worked. <<Are Muir Glenn organic canned whole tomatoes still legal? (Elise had problems after I ate those)>> All canned tomatoes are illegal. You need to use fresh tomatoes and cook them yourself. In my opinion, you need to go way back to the beginning and start over.... stay on stage one or two... you're using some advanced foods.... probably too advanced for you right now, such as peppers, onions, celery. Onions and peppers could definitley cause problems for a nursing baby... even if YOU were doing great, gut-wise. Go back to all peeled and COOKED foods..... in the first two stages.... and take out peanut butter! Patti
Guest guest
Your baby is reacting much like my girlfriends baby and it turns out that she (the baby) has a severe peanut allergy Her doctor advised her (the mom) to take out peas and other legumes from her diet too as well as the peanuts. Spitting up and arching got better right away for the baby. Mom felt better too. As for the teething thing. Frozen foods work best. I use to make popsicles from my breast milk and let my kids gnaw on them to sooth red swollen gums. In my opinion, I wouldnt use any prepared teething remedies. Otherwise has your baby been well, as far a colds or viruses. Maybe she isnt well. Did she just get a vaccine. There might be other reasons why she isnt doing well besides diet. Most likely diet, but look into other things as well. Re: please help baby is miserable/LONG >I don't know enough about what's going on with this baby... how old? >What's the diagnosis, etc?
