Hello to everyone-

I live in the Detroit area and on July 25th went in for an ERCP and

ended up in the hospital for five weeks. My gastro also performed a

sphyncterectomy (sp?) and accidently knicked something which led to

my parateneal cavity filling with fluid, pancreatitis and the

development of pseudocysts. While in the hospital I had TPN, a lot

of IV antiobiotics and then ended up with blood infections from the

PIC line. I went home with home health care for a short while with

IV antiobiotic. I no longer take the antibiotics but am still on

pain patch ( 12mcg Duragesic) I have started back to work. I have

good days and bad days and can not always figure out what causes the

pain to escalate. I am careful to eat low fat and now can not seem

to tolerate milk or raw veggies. I have several questions and

welcome your input:

1) is there a special diet which helps? 2) how do you know when to

stop the pain patch 3) how can you avoid withdrawal from the patch (

I have been on opiates since July) and does anyone from my state

(Michigan) know of an excellent medical malpractice attorney? I have

reviewed some of your postings and am saddened by the collective

pain and suffering. There is nothing worse than being betrayed by

your body over something as basic as eating ( which in my opinion

should be a joy). I hope we all find good health!

Welcome:

You have come to right group. I read with interest your post seeing

you were from the Detroit area. I am from Waterford but live in

Asheville, NC now.

The best malpractice attorneys in the state of Michigan (at least

they were when I was there) are Charfoos and Charfoos. I hope I

have spelled that right.

The first thing I thought when I read your note was when are you

getting an attorney?

As far as diet, very low fat, not too much protein at one time as it

overloads the pancreas.

I don't know about the pain patch because I am not on it but others

here are and I bet they can help you. Heidi Hess-Griffeth is out of

town right now but she has a lot to offer as well as Mark Armstrong

and he has pre-pneumonia so he might not be answering for a few

days. But hang in there, you will get the info you need.

Try those attorneys.

BTW, where in Michigan exactly do you live? I would be interested

in knowing the name of the doctor because I am in the medical

profession (I have very little tolerance for it because of that

also) and know lots of those folks up there and can sometimes give

you some " inside info. "

Pancreatitis and Your Diet

Your diet dsould contain 30g fat per day. Your doctor may advise you to take MCT

oil (to prevent fat malabsorption).

Here are some tips on how to read food labels and count fat grams:

a.. Look at the total number of fat grams on the nutrition label to determine

how much fat you will be eating.

b.. Be careful: Don't forget to look at the portion size per serving. The

number of fat grams listed on the label, might only be for a very small amount

of food.

c.. Learn the different food label claims. Read the FDA Specifications for

Health Claims and Descriptive Terms below.

d.. Use low-fat or fat free products, and count the total fat grams that you

eat. Low-fat and fat free products will help you achieve a 30g fat diet. On a

30g fat diet, you should consume no more than 4oz of lean meat per day. (4oz of

lean has 12 g of fat. This would leave 18g of fat from other foods like breads,

grains etc) (30g-12g =18g)

e.. Don't forget! The regular foods you eat (grains, breads, meat) in your

diet will add up to 30g of fat easily. For example, 1 slice of bread has about

1-2g fat. So, you probably will not have any room for the pure fat exchanges

listed below.

Common Myths

a.. You don't need fat in your diet

b.. Fat free foods are low in calories

c.. Vitamins give you energy

d.. You need extra vitamins during emotional stress

5 Grams Fat Exchanges (one serving)

1 tsp oil 1 Tbsp red-fat mayonaise

1 Tbsp regular salad dressing 2 Tbsp chitterlings, boiled

2 Tbsp red-fat salad dressing 2 Tbsp coconut, sweetened, shredded

1 tsp margarine: stick, tub, sqeeze 1 Tbsp cream cheese: regular

Butter:

1 tsp stick

1 tsp whipped

2 tsp red-fat 2 Tbsp cream cheese: reduced fat

1 tsp shortening or lard

2 Tbsp sour cream: regular

3 Tbsp reduced fat sour cream

1 tsp mayonaise Olives: 8 large black

10 green stuffed

1 Tbsp red-fat mayonaise

1 Tbsp regular salad dressing 2 tsp peanut butter, smooth or crunchy

2 Tbsp red-fat salad dressing 1 Tbsp seseame seeds

Nuts:

6 almonds 10 peanuts

4 pecan halves 6 mixed nuts 1 Tbsp pumpkin or sunflower seeds

To avoid withdrawl from narcotic...you want to start taking less and less

over a period of time till you are off of the narcotic all together.....You

are the only one who will know if it is time to quit taking the narcotic.
