HI Sheila/experienced SCDers,

I am afraid that after a few days of not visible blood

my daughter has had more blood than before and little

mushy feces (or no feces at all) for 6 or 7 times a

day (expecially at night). She is obviously in a

relapse and we do not know how to come out of it. She

went back on the intro diet

(3 days ago) with no results yet. Actually I think

that apart from a bit of blood mixed with feces, she

is not eliminating enough feces. I haven't called her

gastroenterologist yet because I know the answer: try

with high dosage steroids and if they don't work take

her into hospital for INFLIXIMAB which may or may not

work. He has never supported SCD diet. She has started

asacol suppositries because they helped last time.

Please tell me your experience with blood in feces and

the diet. Can we wait for steroids or not? She would

do anything to avoid steroids. She does her normal

life (school, sports and all), eats very little food:

chicken soup with pureed carrots and sometimes

spinach, beef patties or stewed beef with carrots,

roasted veal steak, scrambled eggs, home made diluted

apple and grape juice, two table spoons of SCD yoghurt

a day. She takes azathioprin and started asacol today,

as well as suppositries. The asacol contains lactose

that's why she had not started to take it yet, even if

her doctor had said to take it instead of something

else she was taking last time she went to see him,

last July.

Do you think I should contact by telephone one of the

specialists from the BTVC site list?

Thank you for your help

I think I am doing something wrong because I sent this

message yesterday and did not see it on the group

messages

I'm sorry I don't know much about your daughter's history up to this point. I

also usually work with families of young kids with autism.. I don't have as

much experience with UC and other GI disorders in older kids or adults.

In looking at the foods she is eating, it looks to me like a lot of meat and

eggs, compared to the other foods. So, it would not surprise me that she may be

constipated. Are you certain she tolerates the carrots? Many don't. Has she

tried other veggies? I'm concerned that you say she eats very little... maybe

not enough food for a 16 yr old? Does she have pain if she eats more?

I think I would probably recommend she immediately start using the Electrolyte

Drink, because it helps with both diarrhea and constipation. She could take

small sips of this throughout the day. And also more veggie or fruits for fiber

(cooked).

Is she taking any supplements, besides the meds?

I do work with a family who's young son has both autism and issues with GI

bleeding, which have improved with SCD. I hesitate to compare the two, though,

because each case is so very different. It's hard to know what the cause is.

Need more information!

Dear Patti and Gay

--THank you for your answers. My daughter has been

taking salazopyrin (azulfidine) for 8 years. Last June

a new doctor said to stop it and go to asacol

(actually LIALDA that is not available in Italy even

if it is produced in Milan for USA). But she was doing

very well on the SCD and refused to take another drug

while she was well. So I decided to wait for a bit.

She is still taking azathioprine (an immune

suppressant). Any drug has ever helped her to clear

flares, she also became resistant to steroids. Only

the diet did so last May.

Perhaps the drugs limited the extension of her

colitis. Last colonoscopy evidenced that there are

signs of inflammation only in part of the transverse

and descendant colon.

I think she must have had quite a lot of illegals and

her disease flared back slowly, about 2 weeks ago. At

first she had only very little blood with normal

stools and then costipation and blood and now she has

D with blood 6 times at night and 3 times during the

day.

I might have exchanged the very little quantity of

feces, due to little quantity of food, with

constipation (please excuse all this description)

All my friends and family say to give the diet more

time perhaps 4 or 5 more days before calling the

doctor.

Hi Stefania,

I think putting your daughter back onn the strict intro diet might

help. Instead of having large meals have 5-6 smaller meals

throughout the day.

More food earlier in the day is better than having larger meals at

night because digestion slows at night and can cause more diarrhea.

Since she is having blood in her stool, it is best to stop the

yogurt until the diarrhea and bleeding is reduced somewhat. When

you want to start check with me and let me know how she is doing.

At that point, drip the yogurt and start with a tiny amount (so you

don't retrigger diarrhea or bleeding).

When you redo the intro diet make sure that you remove as much fat

from the meats as possible (eg. skimming the fat from the chicken

soup, broiling the burgers to remove grease...)

The carrots should be cooked at least 4 hours and pureed well. You

can puree it with either the broth from the soup or water. I found

that the carrot pureed with soup was easier to tolerate.

You wrote that " she must have had illegals " - do you know what

illegal she had or did she eat an advanced food - or- flu or cold -

or- new medicine/supplement?

Are the suppositories helping now?
