Guest guest
I recently came across these stories (see links below and full story below that) that tell of the dangers that could happen when using alcohol-based gel hand cleaners. http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/sanitizer.asp <http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/sanitizer.asp> http://www.parentdish.com/2007/06/26/hand-sanitizer-can-poison-your-chil\ dren/ <http://www.parentdish.com/2007/06/26/hand-sanitizer-can-poison-your-chi\ ldren/> (read all the way down past the story) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (OKMULGEE, Okla.) May 14 - The pre-kindergarten student at Okmulgee Primary School ingested a small amount of `hand sanitizer` right before lunch. The school says a teacher put some on the child's hands to clean them, but instead of rubbing it on her hands, the girl ate it. The girl had to be rushed to the hospital when she acted intoxicated. You expect hand sanitizer to keep your kids safe but one of the main ingredients in the stuff is actually alcohol. If you turn it over and look at the label it shows 62-percent alcohol that's enough to make adults and many kids drunk or sick. Four-year-old Halle is doing much better but just a few days ago it was a much different story. Halle`s mom says, " I'll never forget the look in her eyes when she looked at me... It was... nuh uh. " " I walked in and she's leaning up against the wall and her eyes are just kinda...doing whatever...they were not focused on anything, she tried to get up and can't walk? " Halle`s dad recalls. Halle`s parents eventually learned their daughter had eaten, rather than rubbed on her hands, a small amount of hand sanitizer. Doctors say the alcohol inside made her intoxicated. The incident scared everyone including school officials. The very next day the school banned hand sanitizer. The school's principal says, " it was a surprise, kinda unbelievable. We were killing the germs before they go to lunch so they wouldn't be eating the germs...and then we find out later...we're doing as much harm as we are doing good. " Halle`s mom says, " it was horrible...I think my heart stayed up in my throat the majority of the day. " Halle's mom now wants other parents to be aware of what can happen... so no one else goes through what they have. So after an incident like this many parents may be wondering...is hand sanitizer safe? Well the makers of hand sanitizer say, " yes it is as long as it's used as directed. That means kids need to put it on their hands and use it on their hands. They should never put hand sanitizer in their mouths. " Poison control experts say drinking hand sanitizer can be fatal in both children and adults. The reason is that sanitizer contains 62-percent alcohol...while most hard liquor contains 40-percent. Beer in Oklahoma meanwhile contains 3.2 percent. Our Autistic pumpkins pick up lots of disgusting stuff, especially the 3 littlest. (We have 6 ASD children) We were always worried that something could happen just like what is told in these situations. We would constantly clean their hands and the alcohol in the gel cleaners would dry out their little hands and make them red and raw. Robin was telling me that one the the aides at our preschoolers class was practically crying, when she used a gel cleaner just yesterday. She was always needing to clean up between the children and lessons. Her hands were cracked and the alcohol made her hands sting something terrible. We found this hand sanitizer that has NO ALCOHOL, actually softens your hands, cleans hands as well or better as the gel, has about 4 times the pumps as the other stuff and the best part? It puts a germ protecting barrier on the hands that lasts about 3 to 4 hours. And it smells good. We use it all the time now and I liked it so much that I have my own web page that sells it. http://www.mypureworks.com/my10kids/tours/product/default.aspx <http://www.mypureworks.com/my10kids/tours/product/default.aspx> Also click on the " View The Product Tour! " link, it will be a short video. (the phone # is not current) Yes, BEWARE when you buy a bottle from my page I'll make about a dollar. But, what do the huge company's make on these alcohol gel products that could be dangerous. That dry out your hands, sting when you use them and only kill germs until the alcohol dries? Hey! These would make great Christmas presents to people you love and care about. The bottom line here is my kids put too many things in their mouths, I'm trying to protect them the best way I know how. Hope this helps you and your family. Our blog: http://autismbitestheblog.blogspot.com/ <http://autismbitestheblog.blogspot.com/>
Guest guest
Even Snopes says that it is *extremely* unlikely for a child to get poisoned by hand sanitizers. I don't really think any of the parents here would leave their children unattended with hand sanitizer, which would be what was necessary to have something like that happen. Of course it's alcohol in the sanitizers. In other sanitizers you will find triclosan, which is an extremely dangerous chemical, far more dangerous than plain alcohol. It also contributes to antibiotic resistance, which is very bad. I'd just hate to see someone jump from the frying pan into the fire and start thinking triclosan sanitizers were safer, because they are not. All the recent articles about lead, for example, are far more worrisome in my opinion. Lead has been found in not only cheap toys (yes like what's at the dollar store), but also in plastics, such as the caps of Elmer's glue sticks. There are really far worse things to worry about and we have to pick and choose here. B.
