Several Questions Please - LONG!!

Hello All!

We are at week 6 (still in stage one) & I have several questions please.

1. Which spices are not " single " or legal (ie: I read some old posts

that stated that curry powder & onion powder had illegals in them)?

We're not seasoning yet with spices but was wondering if there was a

legal list?

2. Vanilla - the one on Lucy's site has alcohol in it...is that

considered ok?

3. When is it ok to introduce fried foods for ASD kids, such as the

carrot chips? I read that fried foods aren't recommended on pecanbread

because they are hard to digest...

4. When is it ok to introduce the goat yogurt (my son was GFCF for over

a year)? What indicators should I look for to determine when to start

the yogurt? And what is the best starting method for a beginner - read

about the electric warming tray & inside oven methods from BTVC -

anyone with experience with either of these methods before investing in

a yogurt maker/dehydrator?

5. I've never cooked a pumpkin before...any advise?

6. Toothpaste - made the recipe from the files section & my son keeps

gagging himself until he throws up (2x/day...ugh!!!). I've even tried

variations with less extract to no avail. HOWEVER, I found a " tutti-

frutti " oil from Lorannoils.com that states " sugar & allergen free "

link:

http://lorannoils.com/Products.asp?

CategoryID=3&SubColumnName=Flavorings Anyone familiar with these

products? I've contacted company by email but haven't heard back yet.

7. Also found Weleda Children's Tooth Gel link:

http://shop.weleda.com/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=9802

(found old post that stated that this product was thought to be illegal

due to algin, but algin isn't listed in ingredients now & ingredients

can be clicked on to be verified of source. Ingredients are: Glycerin,

Water, Silica, Calendula Officinalis, Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel),

Mentha Viridis (Spearmint), Esculin (??), Lemonene*from natural

essential oils (??)

Oh dear...this has turned out to be more than " several " questions!

SORRY!!! And MANY THANKS in advance for any insights!!! I just want to

do this right. This group is such a WONDERFUL SUPPORT!!!!!

Hi, Christy,

Most non-single spices have names that sound like blends: " poultry

seasoning, " " Mexican seasoning " , " Herb Garden " .

Two that don't sound like blends but are: curry powder and chili

powder.

Commercial onion powder and garlic powder are not illegal because

they are blends, but because they have such a tendency to absorb

moisture and cake up, they usually have an illegal anti-caking agent

added.

> 2. Vanilla - the one on Lucy's site has alcohol in it...is that

Alcohol is ok. The part of the grain that is bad has been distilled

out.

I can't say exactly when to try these. If your child is doing well

so far, try a very small amount and see how he does.

I think you should wait until 3-4 months on the diet. There are

really any signs. You just want to be able to tell any reaction to

casein apart from a die-off reaction. Different people seem to like

different methods of making yogurt. You should decide based on what

sounds most practical to you. I use a dehydrator. It's expensive,

but I feel it was a good investment.

> 5. I've never cooked a pumpkin before...any advise?

There are several ways. My favorite way to bake a squash is to

pierce it in several places with a knife and then bake it whole for

an hour at 375F. Then you let it cool, cut it open, remove seeds and

strings, and then scoop out the flesh. I've haven't yet tried a

pumpkin that way, but I think it would work.

I can't tell if this product is legal. But you could use it if the

child doesn't swallow. You can even use regular toothpaste if the

child doesn't swallow it. It is also effective to just brush with

water.

Is garam marsala a legal spice or do we have to find a mix recipe for it? I saw

a recipe on one of the SCD websites that called for it and was wondering. I

LOVE to use that spice.

Bonita,

It's a spice mix. Recipe at http://uclbs.org/recipes/dcms/garammasala.php.
