Okay, I am sorry to bother everyone, but I am going blind here. We

live in Glencoe, Ontario Canada, my daughter is 21 and has FINALLY

been diagnosed with Autism (I have know since she was a baby that she

had autism, but no doctor would confirm as she did not have enough of

the scale to say she did!) She is non-verbal, would lay on the floor

under the ceiling fan and stim for hours at the light and breath very

quickly and heavy, very high pain threshhold, headbanged unbearably

(would bleed alot) screaming, very little sleep needed, constipation

serve, (3 weeks between poops) and it has taken 21 years to receive a

diagnosis! Anyway, here are my questions,

1. I am currently 1 full week into the SCD diet. I am hearing every

talk about being Gluten and Casein Free. My daughter has never been

anything free, so............When I finally introduce the yogurt,

should it be cow's mile or goats milk I make the yogurt with?

2. I am already seeing huge differences. She is very textile (or

tactile) sensetive. For the past 15 years, she will always strip to

just a pull-up once we are home. For the past 4 days she has stayed

dressed until the appropriate time to change, ie) bed or bath. I Have

been keeping track of the differences, but should I try to find a

doctor who can keep track of blood work etc.......to make sure I am

not hurting her?

3. Does anyone know of a doctor in London, ON or Chatham, ON that is

a DAN doctor for adults and is taking on new patients?

4. I have sever UC and the surgeon wanted to operate. I have refused

the operation and am currently following the diet exactly as my

daughter is. Is there a problem with doing that since it is a bit

different then following BTVC exactly?

Thanks so Much for your Help in advance.

Hi Mandy,

My heart goes out to you. What an amazing mom you are

to be fighting for your daughter.

I am also new to the SCD. My son is going to be five

years old next week. I have a new blog to detail our

adventures (or lack thereof, haha):

http://scdgirl.blogspot.com

Now, on to your questions. There are many experienced

people here who are VERY helpful but I will let you

know what I think.

I think it should definitely be goat's milk as it is

easier to digest. We are going to wait a bit longer

before we introduce it here. My son has been casein

free for several months now and gluten free for longer

than that.

There are a lot of people on this list who don't have

supportive doctors. If you are following the intro and

she is getting enough to eat you can't hurt her in my

opinion.

Basically for ASD you can follow the protocol on the

Pecanbread web site:

http://www.pecanbread.com

It is a little different from the BTVC protocol and I

think it is so helpful practically everyone should do

the intro in that way. I really have seen results from

my son in a very short time and when he has reacted to

something, it is to the letter from the book! To say I

am surprised is an understatement.

> 3. Does anyone know of a doctor in London, ON or

I do not know. I don't know how it is in Ontario but

here in the U.S. you may have more luck trying to find

a doctor who is a D.O. (osteopath) or someone who is

familiar with functional medicine:

http://www.functionalmedicine.org

They are doctors who treat the whole body, not like

you just need X drug to treat Y condition. My new

doctor is an osteopath, not on any DAN lists, but she

is listed on the functional medicine web site.

I don't think it's a problem at all. I too am

following the Pecanbread protocol as I have an

autoimmune disease. My doctor suggested I read

Ultrametabolism, but I showed her a summary of BTVC

and she felt it was fine for me to do as long as I

introduced a new food every four days, not two to

four.

Hope that helps! Welcome! :)

B.

Thank you so much for the wealth of info. It can be overwhelming and believe me

when I say for all of us (you included I am sure) we all do our best.

I am hoping to find someone in my area who is doing the diet, or will be.

Possibly so we can cook together. I have made so much apple sauce and pear

sauce and combinations of apple, banana sauce etc....that I can now do it in my

sleep! :0)

So, I will start her with Goat's yogurt, when we do begin the yogurt, and I will

continue to search for a doctor or doctors to help me sort this out!

Thank you again!

Hi, Mandy,

Congratulations on seeing huge differences already! I agree with

; goat is easier to digest. This is a very nutritious diet and

will not hurt your daughter. And there is no problem with you also

trying the diet in the same form as your daughter. However, if you

yourself would like to eat the legal cow dairy products (aged cheeses,

butter, yogurt from cow's milk, dry curd cottage cheese), you certainly

could. Those are the products we eliminate for people on the autism

spectrum.

I bet! We only recently introduced apples as we are

doing one food every four days -- the really slow

approach.

I personally think it is better to wait for the yogurt

until at least stage 2. I think during stage 1 when

you're still figuring out exactly how your kid reacts

to different foods, it would be hard to tell if the

yogurt is helping. Well, now that we are almost out of

stage 1, I know. My son will have explosive diarrhea

whenever he eats something that does not agree with

him! I think it's amazing because he never really had

that before, just loose stools. After starting the

diet he had classic reactions like the book described,

so I definitely feel like I'm on the right track!

If your kid was casein free beforehand I think the web

site recommends waiting three months, especially if

you know your kid reacts to casein. I know your kid

wasn't casein free so I suppose you could start sooner

than that. I probably will start sooner as well as my

son never seemed to have a real reaction to casein,

but he was kind of addicted to cheese. Who isn't! :)

It may be best to start with the goat's milk yogurt (and maybe goat

cheeses) and start with a small amount as she may have die off.

After much improvement you may decide to try cow milk yogurt to see

if she tolerates it or you may decide to just stick with goat dairy.

Lots of info at http://pecanbread.com/new/yogurt1.html

I am not sure what you mean by hurting her: do you mean causing

deficiencies like low iron, insufficient carbs, etc...?

There is a list of SCD friendly doctors at

You can follow the diet whichever way works best for you. Some

adults do the diet with dairy (like me) some do it without dairy. It

can work fine either way.
