Guest guest
Hi, my 4 yr old with ASD is on day 7 and has been mouthing toys and his hand/sleeeve since day 4 A LOT. And he didn't do this before. Has anyone had this experience? Please tell me it's not hunger. He is verbal. Also, what kind of reactions with new foods are we looking for here? If he didn't have diarrea before, what counts as a reaction? Unusal aggression? What are we looking for if it is autism that lead us down this road? Does anyone, like me go through all the foods one at a time, and never get a reaction? Is this okay or a sign diet isn't for us?

We started experimenting with butters ( didn't go well) and muffins (did go well), oh and I added cooked pumpkin for the holiday. I am intro one food per day as I don't really see reactions and ama not sure what reaction should look like. With the butters I interpreted unusual aggression and crying at night. The muffins and stewed prunes are because of constipation. Thanks for help!
Guest guest
Hi, , In your post below, you said, " he is verbal. " Is that correct? If it was hunger, then he would tell you, right? With ASD kids, we look for behaviors as signs of food intolerance as well as poop changes. It would seem that the mouthing is an indication of something, either intolerance or die-off. You are concerned because it is a change. Have you kept a food diary? What did you add right before this change? It looks to me like you are adding foods too fast. You need to look at behaviors, such as the mouthing, and then take the time to pull the food that may have caused it and see if the behaviors go away. If you then identify a food as a culprit, wait some weeks and then try it again. After more healing, he may be able to tolerate it. It is not necessarily true that if your child doesn't tolerate a certain food, you can't procede to higher stages. Sometimes people can move on, just leaving out one particular food that bothers them. You asked if there are people who don't see food reactions. For the first 6 months, we were some of those people. SCD cured my son's constipation very quickly. After that we didn't see any food reactions until we tried raw foods. Then it was very tough (we saw bad poops, not behaviors) for a while, staying with all peeled and cooked foods for months and months. Behavior-wise, has made slow and steady progress. All kids are different. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/04 > > Hi, my 4 yr old with ASD is on day 7 and has been mouthing toys and > his hand/sleeeve since day 4 A LOT. And he didn't do this before. Guest guest
It can take 5 days to see a reaction but I usually see them in one day. Every child is different so here is my advice with my experience: Wait more than 24 hours, keep a food diary, careful how it was cooked meaning cross contamination is it possible food was cut where bread was made (crumbs). Also you may be doing everything right and he is just detoxing which acts very much like a reaction to food in our case. I know my son has had these same things in his diet and when nothing is new he goes through the same reactions. I mean our whole house is on the diet. I don't know what his diet was like before but going cold turkey is not always a good idea. The 1st week I had my son on the SCD he appeared to go through detox or having reactions which I believe was he was detoxing and I gave him some of his old diet GFCF and he has been doing very well since. We have been on it about 4 months now and I have seen much improvements just with the diet. I wanted to wait until we got this adjusted and now we will venture into more vitamins, minerals and antifungals, probiotics adventure again next week. Hope that helps --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.

You can try doing some epsom salt baths and/or activated charcoal to see if they help. http://pecanbread.com/new/temporarysymptoms.html If either of these help it is more likely it was die off. If it does not then one (or more) of the foods you are using may not be tolerated.
