Guest guest
My son has been SCD for 4 days now. He has eaten a wide variety of foods on the intro diet (eggs, hamburger patty, chicken, turkey). I am having a very difficult time getting him to eat the cooked veggies. He is usually a good veggie, fruit eater (but they have to be raw for him to be interested). Today I hid applesauce & pumpkin puree in an egg pancake. Every morning he wakes crying and is lethargic. Like he has a case of the flu. He has been interested in toys, etc,But is lacking his usual energy. He is very grumpy. I don't want to quit the diet, but it is scary to see him so tired. How do I know if this is due to the die off or something serious? I have been putting apple puree in his water to make sure he has electrolytes & Carbs. From the 2nd day on the diet he has been drinking water like he is in the desert. Is this something usually seen? He has been drinking 6-8 glasses of Apple puree(1 TBSP)/Water every day. I don't want to quit, I just don't what to think about the fatigue. I appreciate any suggestions. p.s. we are noticing more verbalizations and less stimming & more eye contact. Thanks. Guest guest
My son displayed the same symptoms during the first 10 days of SCD. He was tired and could do nothing else but sit on the sofa. He seemed very sick. I begged him to eat rice so that he would get better but he refused to break the new diet....After the initial die off period, he never again had problems with SCD. He loves the diet. I now realize what happened. He had lots of bacteria inside his body. When the bacteria die, their cell wall releases a toxin called LPS. I am now so glad when I hear about children displaying the signs of die off....it means that the bacterias are dying...and the child will be free from their toxins. Please look at this website www.microbialinfluence.com It will give you the courage to go on. Have you read the very bottom of this web page? It discusses die off and how to treat it. http://www.pecanbread.com/new/begindiet1.html I also recommend green tea and S Boulardii for relief of die off symptoms. http://www.giprohealth.com/sboulardii.html I read research articles that demonstrated that green tea and S Boulardii provide relief from bacterial toxins. Guest guest
Thank you for sharing your story! I am focusing on making sure he eats enough carbs tommorrow, but hearing that your son was also a couch potato has rebuilt my confidence. Thank you for all of the info and I would appreciate any recipe suggestions you have. How has the diet helped your son? Is this a safe diet? I read that some people are concerned that high protein consumption can damage kidneys? Thanks You. Tricia > > My son displayed the same symptoms during the first 10 days of SCD. Guest guest
I forgot to mention that my son has not had a bowel movement since the first day he started SCD. He usually goes every day (although, often mushy & smelly). This is a concern to us. Have others experienced this? He is drinking plenty of fluids & has consumed lots of calories (but not enough carbs we think). Thanks Tricia > > My son displayed the same symptoms during the first 10 days of SCD. Guest guest
SCD is a safe diet. It is not about low-carb. It is about eating the right carbs. Do increase your son's intake of legal carbs. mom to -12 SCd 4/23/
Guest guest
I read your comment that it is not about eating low-carb, but just the right carbs. I followed the intro diet:(below) perfectly. It is all protein. My son has been lethargic & we have been extremely worried. I am confused, did we do the intro diet wrong? ASD Intro Diet Since the many of the children with ASD were casein free before beginning the SCDâ„¢, here is a list of suggested foods for the intro diet. The intro diet should be followed for 2-5 days. Chicken broth --Chicken broth with pureed cooked carrots --Chicken broth with chunks of cooked chicken --Chicken broth with cooked carrot sliced into little " coins " --Chicken broth with " chicken balls " made from ground chicken --Chicken broth with " noodles " made from beaten eggs cooked omelette- style into a " crepe " and then rolled up and thinly sliced --Chicken egg-drop soup Chicken pancakes Roasted chicken Roasted turkey Beef broth --Beef broth with meatballs made from ground beef Hamburger patties Eggs --scrambled --poached --hard-boiled --soft-boiled --sunny side up --deviled eggs made with homemade mayo Homemade jello (made from unflavored real gelatin and purple and/or white grape juice) Made in a shallow pan and cut with shaped cookie cutters or into cubes > > SCD is a safe diet. Guest guest
The gelatin is full of carbs and sugars. My son ate at least 2-4 cups of gelatin a day. So are the beverages (grape juice cut with water, apple cider cut with water). They are very important. B. Guest guest
On the intro diet, my son ate plenty of cooked carrots, apple cider (diluted) and grape juice gelatin. All of these are carbs. After 2 days of intro we added banana. I allowed him to eat quite a few. I don't think he was short on carbs. I'm sorry if you misunderstood anything. I hope you get your book soon. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Oops, I meant to say that I allowed him to eat quite a few bananas early in the diet (after the intro). I didn't mean quite a few on day 3. > > On the intro diet, my son ate plenty of cooked carrots, apple cider > (diluted) and grape juice gelatin. All of these are carbs. Guest guest
Hi Tricia, > > I forgot to mention that my son has not had a bowel movement since > the first day he started SCD. Thanks > Tricia>>>> Skipping a few days with no bowel movement is not uncommon at the beginning of the diet. It seems to be more common when there has been loose stools or diarrhea. One reason is that the foods on the intro diet are very easy to digest and more of it will be absorbed by the body - resulting in a lot less waste. Another reason is that with healing the body will now use more food to start the healing process. You may also notice an increase in appetite. How is he feeling? Is he having any cramps? Has he had any other change in symptoms besides the decrease of bm's? Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs, PCOD 22yrs mom of and
