Guest guest
What does it mean when someone craves fats? My daughter (age 20, normal body weight), is eating huge amounts of butter all of a sudden, and asking for bacon, fried food, fatty meats. Any insight? Guest guest
Really, I don't know anything about this. But fats are more satisfying than less calorie-dense foods. There is quite a bit of hunger early in the diet. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/

Guest guest
My husbad, 25, CRAVED fats for the first months of SCD. He could even sit down with a spoon and jar of coconut oil and just eat! Ick! We went to a DAN doctor who knows about SCD and he asked what my husband's poo looks like. He was fairly sure that for my husband, anyway, his body wasn't digesting fats correctly. So my husband started on enzymes, taurine, and b vitamins and a good multi. His poo no longer floats and is no longer light in color. He hardly ever craves fats now. I think his body is digesting them properly now. Not sure if your daughter could have a similar thing happening... but it is key to make sure she eats enough fats if she is craving them. A lot of people really dont get enough essential fatty acids... both Omega 3s and 6s. Does she eat fatty fish every week? Take any Omega 6 supplement? We had some tests run that showed my husband was really low in Omega 6 (whereas most people are deficient in Omega 3, people descended from scandinavia or ireland are at a higher risk of being deficient in Omega 6 rather than Omega 3, specifically AA). So my husbands fat staples: CLO, Omega 6 (borage seed or evening primrose), Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, and animal fat (one of his favorite things is just baked-til-crunchy pig fat. ICK!) I also want to add that her craving might just mean that as things are healing and finding balance on SCD, her body may realize that it may be more beneficial to get calories from fats rather than proteins... carbohydrates are always such an easy calorie source for the body, proteins are a harder one. Since SCD at the beginning stages may mean limited carbohydrates, I can see why the body may choose fats over proteins for the calorie source (proteins require large amounts of water to convert into energy... they also increase the metabolism, or the rate at which the body uses up energy, thus requiring more calorie intake. I havent researched fat digestion as much as protein digestion, but I believe it converts to energy a bit easier than protein. Will need to check my biochem book. Is she taking any supplements or vitamins to aid in proper fat digestion? Have a great day! - scd since april
Guest guest
Thank you so much for this post! We had run out of her enzymes but she didn't seem to have a problem digesting food, so we didn't re-order them. Guess what I just did? : D Also, I'm putting her back on fish oil, pronto.
