Guest guest
Hi, We are on day 35 of the diet. Both of my kids (alomost 3 year old with ASD and NT 19 mo old) have terrible loose poo again. It happens anywhere from 1-4 times a day. They are both also very gassy. When we started SCD we had NO poo issues... What is going on? They are not getting any illegals. They eat a good deal of chicken, eggs, turkey, and bananas. Plus a little 40/60 grape/water juice. (We also do some but not much carrots and pineapple). I pulled the SCD legal probiotic over 2 weeks ago. They both seem to be intolerant to pumpkin, butternut squash, and even possibly acorn squash. We were doing a LOT of squash. If squash was a big problem, does it take a bit to recover? It's been 2 days without any squash and they are still REALLY having problems. I am feeling so lost and frustrated :-( Phenols are also looking like an issue with both kids. I'm seeing red ears, circles under the eyes, and difficulty falling asleep also. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you! Tonja Mom to 3yr old with ASD and 19 mo old NT. SCD Day
Guest guest
For us, bananas do not work. They cause my son to have diarrhea. If you pulled the squash and increased the bananas, that could happen. Bananas to my knowledge feed yeast far more than squashes. What makes you think they are intolerant to squash? BTVC cautions against using eggs when diarrhea is present. Also, what kinds of meats do you use? I was using ground turkey and it had illegals in it. I did not realize it until later. B. Guest guest
My daughter has a confirmed IGG allergy to cantaloupe, which is in the same family as squash, pumkin, etc. She always protested anything from that family, and now we know why. She also won't eat carrots. (She loves broccoli, brussel sprouts, artichokes and asparagus but has an IGG to cabbage, and will eat cauliflower if nothing else is offered). I have an IGG allergy to string beans, so we try to stay clear of that. I guess that leaves us with zuccini - which she often won't eat and spinach, which has no carbs in it. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. MAry SCD (as far as grains, but doing broccoli and brussel sprouts even though we should be in stage 1) goal is to get rid of loose poops Week 2 > > > Hi, > > > > We are on day 35 of the diet. Guest guest
Without bananas I'm afraid that my son will starve. And I mean that seriously. He did not appear to have a problem with bananas, as they were the first thing we added after the intro diet. We did not start having poo problems until I added the SCD legal probiotic from GI health. But like I said it's been stopped for over 2 weeks. Diarrhea associated with squash is apparent, because it happens within hours of the squash, and in the case of the pumpkin, you could still SEE the pumpkin (from legal pumpkin pie). My ground turkey is safe, I've checked and double checked my meats. I only get it from Whole Foods, and there are no additives, hormones, or antibiotics used. As a prior vegan I'm ultra paranoid about meat quality. I saw BTVC cautions eggs with diarrhea...but then what do I feed him?? He eats the nut free/dairy free bread, and banana pancakes every morning! (with eggs and bananas) I'm afraid he'll starve, he's skinny, we've fought for every pound...and he's VERY fussy. (He really really misses his baked treats from pre-SCD days....they were GFCF) My 19 mo old is much less fussy, but having the same issues. She is also quite small. (Being SCD did clear her reflux though!!) Thanks, Tonja Mom to almost 3 yr old with ASD and 19 mo old NT
Guest guest
Hi, , Have you made zucchini spaghetti noodles? My son loves them stir-fried in olive oil with garlic. Boiled spinach has 3.4 grams of carbs per half cup. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Thanks , My daughter won't touch zuccini as of lunch today. Oh well. Will try to get some spinach to see what happens with that. Mom to -4 SCD 11/12/07 (that's when we had our last grains, but we are still struggling to implement the intro diet) > > Hi, , > Have you made zucchini spaghetti noodles? Guest guest
Gee, that's too bad. Is it the texture of steamed zucchini that troubles her? The noodles have a better texture. You might try just one; use a vegetable peeler and make strips down to the seeds. Then stir-fry. When giving spinach, it is a good idea to add some vitamin C (food or supplement) as Sheila suggests. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Hi Tonja, It is possible that your daughter is going through a die off reaction. The probiotic might have started it. When you took out the squash there was even less food for the gut bugs so the die off increased. Try using activated charcoal, if your child improves, then you will be more sure that it is die off. Die off reactions might last for 10 days or more. If things do not improve after 3 weeks then get the help of a SCD counselor. What are all the symptoms that your children have? Any manufactured foods? Supplements? Chelation? Mimi > > > > > > > Hi, > > We are on day 35 of the diet. Guest guest
Oh Mimi, thank you so much for replying! I am near tears, I am at my wits end for what I'm doing wrong. My poor 19 mo old daughter has a bright red bottom, and she's potty trained! The poo is like acid as it comes out. I'm afraid she'll get dehydrated, she won't drink the electrolyte solution. But she is drinking water and eating lots of jello. She gets no supplements besides the zyme prime and peptizyde which she has been on for months. She did get one dose of probiotic a couple weeks ago when my little guy fed his sis his probiotic banana shake! I did forget to add that she was getting 2 tablespoons of goat yogurt a day, but we'd cut that out for the last couple of days for her also. (We'd worked up from a 1/8tsp. and she'd never had a problem). I cut out squash, eggs, and Welch's grape juice. All my kids had to eat today was -lots of jello (1/2 apple cider- totally pure no additives/ 1/2 water, tiny bit of honey) -ground turkey made into balls and boiled -chicken from chicken soup with a couple tiny baby carrots- all boiled for 4 hours. -water My little guy (almost 3, ASD)takes the zyme prime, peptizyde (for over 3 months) and he takes the GI prohealth, pro-child vitamin, but only a 1/2 dose. His diarrhea has only been a couple times a day, and today he had no bm, just lots and lots of gas. The juice (Welch's) is the only manufactured product...the ground turkey is no additive from Whole Foods. No spices except organic, pure cinnamon (served with the pumpkin) and sea salt. We do no chelation here. My daughter has reflux (although that disappeared after a week on SCD), and she was showing some signs of regression after her 15 month shots. (That also stopped with the addition of the goat yogurt.) The diarrhea is new and not something we've ever dealt with in her history. My son is ASD. He had diarrhea on and off since he was 7 mo old until we went gluten free in Feb 2007. Since then he was doing good, unless he got cross contaminated by playing with someone/thing that had touched gluten. (He is WAY sensitive). When we started SCD there were no poo issues. He developed dirrhea on again off again after the week on SCDophilus. But that has been stopped for over 2 weeks. Yesterday was bad. Again thank you, and sorry for the length! Guest guest
Hi Tonja, One of my kids also had diarrhea during his initial die off symptoms. The symptoms went away by themselves and he does very well with the diet now. I might be tempted to take away the vitamins until the issue resolves. Your son seems to be improving, the diarrhea is being replaced by constipation. C is a milder symptom than D. What kind of Welch's grapefruit juice are you using? Green tea, activated charcoal and Epsom salt baths might help the die off symptoms Maybe someone else has another insight..... Hang in there, you will soon have a better outcome. Guest guest
Thank you so much Mimi and ! We are using the Welch's purple grape juice. I have taken it out of their diet for 2 days, I'm holding it suspect right now! I read white grape can be easier on them?? I've made some epsom salt lotion, so hopefully that will help. I'm going to go looking for the activated charcoal. I'm also wondering if my 19 mo old has a touch of the rotavirus... Thank you so much!
