Guest guest
My son is on Day 5 of the SCD. He has been highly lethargic & fatigued since day 2. Also, he has had screaming fits in the middle of the night(which never happens)and unquenchable thirst for the first 4 days. I followed the ASD Intro Diet (Below) exactly. By the 3rd day we tried to introduce cooked veggies(stage 1), but he did not eat them. Yesterday (day 4 we got him to eat alot of pumpkin & apples) and today he has eaten also carrots & green beans. I was ready to pull him off of the diet last night, but today we saw a jump in energy. I know I have read about the symptoms of die off..and have been told this is what we are seeing....but honestly as soon as we got the carbs into him (last night and today) his energy improved tremendously. I feel that it is not a coincidence and that his lethargy was possibly due to a lack of Carbs. We are concerned that we have caused him unneccesary suffering or damage(by starving him for 3 days w/o carbs). Did we do the diet correctly? How do you know that the lethargy seen in the beginning is from the die off and not the carb deprivation? We are still sticking to the diet, but I just want to get more information to solidify that the diet is healthy & safe. I ordered the book, but am waiting for it patiently. Thanks! ASD Intro Diet Since the many of the children with ASD were casein free before beginning the SCD™, here is a list of suggested foods for the intro diet. The intro diet should be followed for 2-5 days. Chicken broth --Chicken broth with pureed cooked carrots --Chicken broth with chunks of cooked chicken --Chicken broth with cooked carrot sliced into little " coins " --Chicken broth with " chicken balls " made from ground chicken --Chicken broth with " noodles " made from beaten eggs cooked omelette- style into a " crepe " and then rolled up and thinly sliced --Chicken egg-drop soup Chicken pancakes Roasted chicken Roasted turkey Beef broth --Beef broth with meatballs made from ground beef Hamburger patties Eggs --scrambled --poached --hard-boiled --soft-boiled --sunny side up --deviled eggs made with homemade mayo Homemade jello (made from unflavored real gelatin and purple and/or white grape juice) Made in a shallow pan and cut with shaped cookie cutters or into cubes
Guest guest
My son had severe die-off and so I stopped the diet. What a mistake on my part. Try adding some cooked pears and apples to your sons diet to keep the carbs up. Maybe try the advanced first and then after a few months try the stage 1 as his die-off might be especially bad. Some people also use activated charcoal to deal with die-off. Being addicted to carbs when you have a yeast problem really is like detox. I can't say stick with it because I didn't but I can say my son still has all his GI and yeast issues and the only normal bm in his life was on SCD. So I'll be starting again but I know it's scary- - this will be my fourth try. It's scary to feel we are starving our kids, my son vomited the first night on the diet seven months ago and still won't eat chicken and did a hunger strike for three days before I caved. It's tough and I really look to the parents out there doing this! It's a great diet but I feel for you too! Cheryl > > My son is on Day 5 of the SCD. How do you know that the lethargy seen in > the beginning is from the die off and not the carb deprivation?>>>> My children went through the lethargy and fatigue exactly as you describe. For my son it lasted about 2 days and then he was back to his normal frenzied self. I had him on the intro diet for 4-5 days. Both kids had plenty of legal juices, homemade gelatin etc... Epsom salt baths often help with the die off. Some children still have die-off when off the intro and they are eating/drinking plenty of legal carbs.
