Guest guest
Hi all, We just started SCD on Saturday. We're doing the intro phase - but I'm confused about introducing yogurt. We've been CF for over a year. My son is PDD, 10 years old. No diarrhea. I looked through old posts on this group as well as searched google and found two different recommendations - the first is to wait 3-4 months to ensure complete die-off, etc., the second is to start goat yogurt in 2-3 weeks after you've 'stabilized' on scd. I know I'm asking a question that's been asked over a dozen times, but please help. What do you all recommend? I'm really anxious to start the yogurt since it will expand our diet considerably and everyone says there's such improvement after starting. Thanks for your help! Guest guest
Hi, Lubna, You have just started your son on SCD. Even though he doesn't have a history of diarrhea, you may see some strange poops, lethargy, etc. from die-off. We want to you wait 3-4 months because we don't want you to think these symptoms are a reaction to casein. When you start, give a very tiny amount, like 1/8 teaspoon per day, doubling each day if you don't see a bad reaction. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Thanks , You're right - he's been incredibly lethargic, but has improved since yesterday. Also, I think I wasn't giving him enough fluids - the broth and juices. Today we started veggies - some spinach and zucchini. He hates carrots. His BM's have become more irregular since we started the diet. Thanks, Lubna > > Hi, Lubna, > You have just started your son on SCD. The first (3-4 months) one is meant for those who start the diet with many symptoms and/or have lots of die off. The 2-3 week recommendation is for those who (especially if you were CF preSCD) start the diet , have some die off but quickly settle into the diet. Some people start yogurt shortly after beginning the diet. In general that is mostly those who were eating dairy prior to SCD or those who do not have severe symptoms. If you have been dairy free a long time it is best to introduce the yogurt low and slow. In other words start with a small dose; ~ 1/8-1/4 tsp and increase slowly according to the reaction that you note. If there is a lot of die off go slowly, if you don't see much die off reaction and no negative symptoms increase the amounts quickly. In your case since he was CF for the past year it is best to get firmly established on the diet and then try a small amount. It may take 1 week and it may take 4 months. We are all individual so there is no hard set rule when it comes to the introduction of food, including yogurt.
