Guest guest
Carolyn, I know that Tomatis can be extremely intense for some children so this does make sense. What some kids do is this..... some kids are hyper-sensitive but when they are little, learn to block sounds because of the pain and thus 'turn-off' their hearing mechanism. Does this make any sense to you? Was your daughter a head-banger? Kids who head-bang and are self-abusive are often having issues with hyper-auditory and thus the head-banging brings relief. It soothes the pain as it blocks out the sounds. So.... if your daughter is hyper-sensitive, I would believe that she still needs listening therapy normalize her sensory channels. Try the cranial scalp message that I posted from Svea Gold's exercises on her for a while and see if you can begin to work this area. A nice little message at bedtime is also like a carress and your daughter will love it and begin to look forward to it after a while. At first, it may bug her. If you see her eyes & nose twitch reflexively while doing this message, then you really know that she needs it! I would then really look into a softer program such as The Listening Program. It does not work as fast and you need to commit to the long term but it is gentler and easier on the child than Tomatis. I hear very, very good things from other boards about the Berrard program as well.
