What do they do if enzyme levels don't decrease after an attack?

Hello all,

I've got another question. I've spent a ton of time looking on the

internet, and can't find what I'm looking for. Again, I know

experiences vary, but not knowing anything at all is driving me

crazy.

After an attack of chronic pancreatitis, what is the course of

treatment if amylase numbers don't decrease?

My husband is just starting his 10th week in the hospital, and had

another attack last week. His amylase started out at 1200, but is

now down to over 700- and holding, and holding...

The regular doctor doesn't seem to know what to do. A GI doctor is

going to be pulled in.

Is it usually a matter of just waiting long enough for the

inflimation to go away?

Any help you all could give would be wonderful.

Thanks,

Jeanette

Hello,

If I understand correctly they have not sent in a G.I. doc yet. I would

definately find out why & demand one now. 10 weeks is an awful long time.

He had one previously. He spent about 6 weeks in the hospital-

closely monitored by a GI doctor- then two weeks in a care center-

and now back in the hospital.

Sorry, maybe I should have waited to ask.

Hello ,

In response to the enzyme levels, my GI doc said to me that he is not really

concerned about the enzyme levels as much as he is the pain level. They are

going to go up and down on a regular basis. When I went in to the ER to get my

stool checked for blood a few weeks ago, I was having no pancreatic pain.

However my lipase was almost 5000. and amylase was almost 300. The ER doc was

stunned as she knew I was haveing pancreatitis going on, but I was not having

any pain. My GI doc is more interested in pain management and control rather

than what the levels are. Just because the enzymes spill in the blood and

increase the levels, does'nt really mean that there is pain going on. and vice

versa. Hope this sheds a little light on what is going on.
