When to start? and how to hide the probiotics in food?

Hi all -

I've read the book, have been reading these discussions for a week

now, have collected a lot of the " legal " foods and am about to start

with my almost 6 year old daughter, but I'm a little worried about

starting right now with the holidays upon us. I understand to make it

work, you really need to stick with it 100% . . . but is there any

benefit to starting now if I'm pretty sure sometime over the next

month she's going to get some illegal candy, sweets or other foods at

school or holiday parties, etc.?

My second question: How do you get your kids to take the probiotics?

As soon as my daughter thinks she sees them in her food, she won't

eat it. I've mostly tried mixing it in juice, can I also put it on

hot food (i.e., cook it in to things)?

For background, my daughter has had very loose stools for her whole

life (3-5 a day), has been checked out and tested by Pediatric GI

doctors and no one can ever figure out why - no CF, not Celiac, etc.

She also has low muscle tone, some motor planning deficits and balance

issues but functions at a high level; no autism and slightly

overweight, not underweight as one might suspect. She's also been

tested for all the main food allergies and tests negative for

everything. We have tried chewable acidopholis (sp?) from Trader

Joe's and American Health (unlikely they are legal), increased fiber

and fat (suggestions from GI drs.), and Ortho Biotic Powder (from

Ortho Molecular Products), but with no success.

This diet seems like it should be perfect for us to try . . . I just

can't imagine how we are going to stick with it 100%. Any tips?

Suggestions? Advice?

Thanks so much!!

Hi Dorrie,

Keep in mind that some children test negative for

celiac, the whole nine yards, but are still sensitive

for foods. That is why SCD is so valuable. It combines

a healing diet with an elimination diet, as you

introduce foods slowly. It is the BEST way.

I am very gluten intolerant but was never diagnosed.

That is OK as long as I feel better!

Hi Dorrie,

I did not start with any probiotics. In the beginning,

it can be confusing and too much to do probiotics with

the intro. I would introduce probiotics later, with

any other food.

The diet itself is made to resolve diarrhea, and some

kids never tolerate probiotics. I'd say to try it

without any probiotics first.

I'd say if you are very concerned about the holidays,

wait until afterwards to do the intro diet. It really

won't work unless you are 100 percent committed.

HI. You can't heat probiotics for sure. Try using a blender or stir

stick to put in apple or pear sauce.

My opinion: I would start. QWe started right before thanksgiving and

I had to jump ahead on diet and make an SCD pumpkin pie or honey

candy or give him fresh fruit a little too early to get us through

that special day, then went back to one food at a time. There is

never a god time to start this diet in my opinion.

Waiting a couple of weeks would save you a load of stress with all of

the holiday stuff going on! Maybe you could start the intro during

the week she is off from school RIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS. Then, if she

has die-off or does not feel well, she will not have to deal with

school. It is a actually a perfect set-up if you are going to be

home with her, anyway, but if you work, you could wait till that

weekend.

Maybe you can spend the nest couple of weeks cutting down on sugar

and starches rather than cutting them all OUT and getting her used to

NOT having some of the snacks that you usually have around the house.

There are a lot of wonderful cookbooks that Santa could but you for

Christmas, too :-)

Another thought is getting her used to a probiotic NOW so that her

body is already used to one by the time you start the diet. It is

good to start only one thing at a time, anyway, so you would have a

goal you would be accomplishing RIGHT NOW until it is time to reaally

buckle down and do this.

We mix the acidopholis with water in a medicine syringe and shoot it

right in our sons mouth and give him a preferred food item to " chase "

it down with. It is quick and pretty tastless and a way to just " lay

the law down " that he has to take it no matter what. At the

beginning, we had to lie him down, but now he just lets us do it

because it is a habit and he knows there is no choice. It took us

months of trying to hide different supplements in his food to no

avail to get to this point.

We were advised by our doc to give him probiotics 1st thing in the AM

(at least 1/2 hour before he eats) and last thing in the PM so that

they have all night to settle in undisturbed by digestion of other

foods. If you decide to do this, I would only stat with 1/4 capsule,

see how they are tolerated, and increase the dose by 1/4 cap/dose.

Good luck, and God bless. You have a challenging yet rewarding 2008

coming!

This is how I started , and for him, at least, it seemed to

eliminate the horrible die-off effects that others have described. He

did have diarrhea for 2 weeks when we started the intro, but was

cheerful the whole time.
