Guest guest
Hi there! I've been asking questions here and there for about a month as I was preparing to start my ASD son and I on this diet over Christmas break. I just spoke with his DAN! doctor on Wednesday and there are some things that she wants to address immediately (antibiotics for clostridia...yikes! and MB12 shots) So...while we were planning to start him over Christmas break, we'll be putting it off until his spring break instead. (I don't think we can swing the beginning stages while he's in school for 8 hours/day and we can't be implementing any dietary changes while we do the MB12 trial) So, I decided to start myself today. I was diagnosed with IBS, but pretty certain yeast is what is causing all the problems. I just want to make sure of a few things so I don't screw it all up. 1. Because i'm fighting yeast, do I exclude fruit juices and the homemade jell-o? If yes, for how long? Does that mean that at first there are no carbs? I want to avoid the carrots for a few days at least. 2. when can I add in the legal cheeses? 3. when can I add in legal spices? 4. My son and I are both gluten free, but not casein free, so does that mean I can start the goat yogurt as soon as I get the yogurt maker? if I have to avoid fruits/honey for a while, can I flavor the yogurt with anything? Thanks so much! Kari
Guest guest
Hi Kari, I too felt I had yeast issues. So for the first two weeks before starting the diet, I ate nothing but meats and cooked vegetables. I was able to break a pretty severe sugar addiction that way, despite being miserable! For what it's worth, the only source of carbs you will have are the vegetables and jello in the beginning. I did eat the jello and never felt it was contributing to my sugar addiction at all, but I suppose you could offset it by eating more vegetables. The problem in the beginning is calories. I've accidentally put myself into a state of starvation, so the jello helps because it is higher in calories. I think the ease in digestibility of the intro foods helps offset the yeast feeding. I do not really drink fruit juice though, so I don't think it would be hard to stay away. I believe you can use lemon juice (fresh, no pulp) pretty soon as long as you test it like a food. For honey, I know that BTVC recommends using only 1/4 the amount of honey you would normally use if you were not having a yeast problem. The cheese restrictions are for people who were casein free or people with children who are on the spectrum. I'd extend that to include children who are ADD ADHD but otherwise if you're starting the diet for ulcerative colitis, diarrhea, or Crohn's, I think you could just introduce dairy as Breaking the Vicious Cycle recommends. That is at least my understanding. B. ASD son, RA self, SCD Nov. 2007 http://scdgirl.blogspot.com --- karicreehan wrote: > Hi there! Guest guest
Welcome to the group, Kari, Yes, you can definitely start legal dairy, and it does not have to be goat dairy sincer you weren't CF, but goat dairy is easier to digest so you might want to use it anyway. It would be good to give some yogurt to your son if he is on antibiotics. Just don't give it at the same time as the antibiotic. S. Boulardii is a good probiotic to put him on to combat clostridia. I don't think you should eliminate the juice jello or the carrots on the intro because then you wouldn't have any carbs. The intro is only for 2 days unless you have really bad symptoms. After the intro you can try some different carbs, one at a time, watching for reactions. You don't have to drink juice and you can restrict honey if you think it's necessary. You can add spices after the intro and you can add cheese then, too. Actually dry curd cottage cheese is on the intro diet. You can follow the one in BTVC (as opposed to the variation on pecanbread.com) since it includes dairy and you have never been CF. > > Hi there!
