Another silly question

Hi everyone I have to say I love reading all your stories, they keep me

motivated especially when I sit down and try to work on my patient letter! I

have a silly question. After surgery can we ever drink a diet caffeine free soda

again? I currently drink Sam's Choice caffeine free, sugar free, sodium free clear

soda. I know it doesn't sound real appealing but it's a way for me to get my

extra fluids in. I drink water and caffeine free tea with equal in it the rest

of the day. I've heard people talk about not drinking sodas or having caffeine

but I wasn't sure if that was a temporary thing right after surgery or if it's

forever. I will give it up if I have to, will do anything to succeed at this

surgery but if I don't it will be one less adjustment I have to conyend with.

Thanks Jean MGB Hopeful

It is not a silly question. I will respond- but if you other post-ops out

there disagree with what I am saying - Please speak up. As far as I know- we

are no longer allowed Coffee, tea, or sodas. Not so much because of the

caffeine (of course- we shouldn't have that either)- but because of the

tannic acid and carbonation. As I have heard Dr. R say before- It is a small

price to pay for good health. Basically all I live on now is- Water and

Gatorade. I don't even drink juice because it has made me " dump " in the past.

I eat a lot of fruit and do have an occasional home-made smoothie for extra

potassium. I hope this helps. Good luck and as I said before- I hope other

post-ops speak up if I am wrong.

Hi Jean: Dr. R recommends against soda of any kind. Says it contains acid that

is known to cause ulcers..which we have to protect against with our new

stomachs. I was a diet coke person and had to give it up....and for the first

few months I missed it. But I don't now.

Jean,

It is my understanding that is it not only the caffeine but the carbonation

that will distort your new stomach. I used to drink at least 2-3 Pepsi's a

day. The first week was withdraw city but after that I didn't really even

miss them. In my dreams I will take a drink and then realize what I have

done. In the dream I gain back all the weight I have lost because I took a

drink of carbonation. Too funny. I have also heard that pop - even flat -

causes people severe gas cramps. No thanks for me.

Hope this information helps.

Hi Jean..

I'm sure a thousand people have answered this already but just incase

they haven't, here's the answer I got pre-op.. It's not the caffeine that we

are advised not to have... The carbonation in soda can not only stretch the

pouch but can also cause ulcers in our new tummies.. Also, we are advised

not to have teas or coffee because of the acid it causes which can also

cause ulcers.. I know I will probably get flamed for this but last time I

checked the manual <unless it's been updated in the last 3 weeks> it stated

that coffees tees and sodas were not good choices because of their low

vitamin and potassium content but no where did i find that they were

absolutely forbidden... Personally, I see it as a judgement call.. If you go

out with friends and want something different once or twice a year, i

honestly don't think a cup or glass of tea will truely hurt us.. But, I

definately wouldn't do it soon after surgery.. I am 7 weeks post op and

still don't touch the stuff... If you like to have a cup of tea once in a

while like I do, I have found <after advice from other post ops> that hot

chocolate is great and if you like the taste of cappuchino or mocha coffee,

get some " postum " and put 1/2 teaspoon in with it.. it's great! :)

I don't think anything one thing will hurt us as long as we take it in

moderation.. meaning, one or two sips..

In my thoughts and prayers,

Terri
