Guest guest
Hi everyone, I need input and advice. My daughter, apserger's syndrome, age 13, SCD since 9:15-2007. This week it's been very very weird. She started refusing to eat bananas, saying that she needs to kill off some yeast. She was wanting to be very weird and restrict her SCD diet in all sorts of ways. She's been acting irrationa, but is unable to tell me specifically what is going on with her, physicallyl. She's totally spaced out all week, has gotten NO school work done, and had a hard time believing today that it's already Saturday (thought it should be Thursday), is acting all twitchy, and shivering. She's been wetting herself during sleep and just now awake as well. Totally spacey, staring at the walls alot, and I keep having to repeat information and she acts like she's never heard it before. She's acting very afraid and I'm also getting afraid. I'm a little bit freaked out. Is this yeast die-off? We don't have a supportive doctor at all, and she's not currently on any medications or supplements...just SCD and goat yogurt. Her diet in the past couple of days included: chicken soup with carrot and garlic, eggs, fish, acorn squash, homemade mayo, broccoli, onion, tuna, applesauce (granny smith), 1 portion of stewed prunes yesterday and avocado. I've been having to watch her eat. She's been almost refusing to eat, or taking an over hour to eat one bowl of soup. Just picking at her food, and being totally irrational, saying things like: " I have to let this bite digest before I can eat another bite. " As far as I know she's not had any dietary infractions. (Possibly the Organic Turkey from Thanksgiving? I don't know.) Day before yesterday she'd asked me to buy her some epsom salts so that she could do an epsom salt bath. Later I noticed on the package were instructions for taking it internally as a laxative. I asked her if she had done this, and apparently she'd done it twice, from what I gather. Communication has definitely taken a down hill slide this week. She was up on and off several time Thursday night using the bathroom, needless to say. Did she poison herself? Needless to say I took that stuff away from her and lectured her about laxatives and their abuse. It's all very weird, and I'm very worried. Any input and advice is welcome. Is there anything I can give her to make it better? Thanks, Alana mom to dd 13 apserger's syndrome, SCD since 9-15-2007
Guest guest
Alana, It sounds like eating disordered behavior. Girls who are at the age your daughter is are very susceptible to this sort of thing. Does she have perfectionist tendencies? Does she say negative things about her body a lot? The laxatives can mess her up even further, throwing electrolytes out of whack. I'm concerned about her fat intake, too. How much of the avocado is she eating? If she is shivering that could be another clue that she is not eating enough. I think you will have to watch her like a hawk. Either toss the Epsom salts in the garbage (without her knowledge so she doesn't go digging) or hide them REALLY well. Make sure she eats small meals every few hours. Has she lost weight recently? Eating disordered people often behave in extremely irrational ways, sometimes acting like someone with a multiple personality disorder. I noticed that she hasn't been SCD for too long. I haven't either and I can tell you that I have to force myself to eat sometimes because there just isn't the same kind of appetite on this diet. I could easily see myself obsessing about my weight, because when you don't eat enough, you don't lose weight, and if I didn't know that, that could spell trouble for a lot of people. Is there a food she really likes? Can you make smoothies for her? You can hide more fat in a smoothie. Just some thoughts. Good luck, I am sure this is very scary for you. B.
