Guest guest
Speaking of yogurt, I went to see my doctor recently. She believes I have trouble with food even though my IgE came back totally clean. So many people get confused about that, they say, " I've been tested, I'm not allergic to any food, " not realizing the intolerance thing. My doctor said I can either do IgG testing or try an elimination diet. I told her we were doing the elimination diet with the SCD so I will try that first. She also thought I should start probiotics. I told her about the SCD yogurt and showed her some pages I printed out from the site. She was impressed. She said if the numbers were accurate, it was really good. She did not comment on the strains although she wanted to see which ones were in it, which I also showed her. But she was sick with food poisoning so she was trying her best. Poor lady. She mentioned another probiotic...six strains or something from a manufacturer that doesn't sell to the public. I'm not sure about that one. But I am planning to order my probiotics for the yogurt when I get paid on Friday, and I am going to try a pot and a heating pad. Yay! B. Guest guest
Hi , You probably already know about them, but have you looked into probiotics from GIProhealth? One of the things that had kept us from SCD was the benefit my son was getting from illegal probiotics. We have switched him to the S. Boulardii and Acidophilus with no problems, which is great because with his immense dairy sensitivity, it will be a long, long time before we can think about yogurt. There are some other SCD legal vitamins, but these seem good and are recommended on the Pecanbread site for people who need them. Best Regards, PS - I know I should leave this on your blog, but your post today was fabulous.
Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for the suggestion. I do want to try the yogurt first. While my son has been casein free for a while (and so have I), I have not noticed a huge amount of sensitivity from dairy. I eliminated it because too much seemed to aggravate my arthritis, but I thought that about eggs too. I was wrong. I think. Thanks for the nice comment about my blog! I am really looking forward to yogurt -- dairy! Eee! B. Guest guest
Thanks for the link, Sheila. Are the three strains mentioned for the yogurt the only legal strains of probiotics? I only ask because the Progurt starter is then technically a multi-strain probiotic with L. Bulgaricus, Streptoccus Thermophilus, and L.Casei. B. Elaine felt that there was insufficient information/research on how many bacteria would (a.) perform out of their natural state and (b.) how SCDers would fare with them. She felt that L. acidophilus which has been used for many years and has been successfully used by many SCDers was safe. In recent years she also approved S. boulardii. There has been much research that indicates this good yeast helps with diarrhea, Clostrida overgrowth etc... There has also been good feedback from SCDers. Yogurt starter should not be used as a probiotic powder or capsule. It should be used to ferment foods like milk or veggies. This allows them to fluorish in their natural environments. Does that help clarify? Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs, PCOD 22yrs mom of and
Guest guest
Sheila, Oh my I was not suggesting I would use the yogurt starter as a probiotic. I know almost nothing about them so I thought that the strains that were in the yogurt were also used separately as probiotics. I see that's not the case. I was just wondering aloud, but you answered my questions so thanks! B.
