Guest guest
Hi, , Epsom salts and activated charcoal would be good to have on hand. I would wait with the ProGurt and the yogurt maker. We advise people who have been CF to get over the initial die-off period before starting yogurt. If you don't wait, then you may confuse a reaction to casein with die-off. We recommend waiting 2-3 weeks if die-off is over quickly and the diet is going very well. We recommend 3-4 months if you have lots of die-off and food reactions. Some parents put their kids on SCD cold turkey. Sometimes they have to watch their child refuse to eat and that is very hard. But it can work. Sometimes, it is better to try to expand the child's range of foods first. How about cooking and pureeing a variety of new fruits and trying to get your child to accept them. (You can have a bite of cracker if you have a bite of applesauce first....Later, increase amount of applesauce the child must eat to get the reward....Later, eliminate reward.) Take a look at the intro diet foods listed on www.pecanbread.com. You will see that broiled beef patties, chicken soup and well-cooked carrots, as well as homemade gelatin using diluted legal juices are a big part of the intro diet. Maybe you should try to get your child to accept these first before plunging in. From the way you have described his food preferences, it looks as though it will be a battle of wills; and it is very unpleasant to work hard making soup and gelatin from scratch and having your child refuse to even take a bite, not to mention the worrying about him taking in no calories. We don't recommend just introducing all legal foods regardless of stage. People see better results starting with the intro diet and then adding one food at a time and watching for reactions. However, some do plunge in that way and then go back to the intro diet later. They usually see better results when they have gone back to do the intro diet. Guest guest
THank you for all of this!!! One more question: could I purchase applesauce, pearsauce, or babyfood and cook it up a while? Or is this a no no too? Is it an absolute that I purchase the produce, peel it myself and cook it? > > Hi, , > Epsom salts and activated charcoal would be good to have on hand. It was discoved early on that there is a 2% rule that allows manufacturers to include additives, such as sugar, without listing them on the label as long as it is below 2%. This is very commonly done with fruit products due to variations in the sweetness from one harvest to another. The manufacturer wants a consistent sweetness and will add sugar/corn syrup to even things out and does not need to say so. We do not trust the " no sugar added " label. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Hi , As another mom of a kid on the spectrum all I can say is for you to give this diet a try! I did GFCF with my son and we saw some gradual benefits. (And major regression when I went off it for two days) But when I went SCD with him, the changes were within days amd BIG! We haven't even been SCD for a month and he is already a different kid. Good luck, whatever you decide! son-3yo-PDD-NOS, SCD on week three. -------------- Original message -------------- My 3 year old ASD son has been gfcfsfsf for 2 and ½ months. He has always had loose bowel movements (like soft serve ice cream adhered to the diaper). He would also occasionally have constipation. His bowel movements were more formed initially after starting the diet (I could finally put them from the diaper into the toilet). The formed movements started about a week into the diet. As of the last couple of weeks his bowel movements are not as cohesive again. In fact they are back to as soft and stinky as they were initially before the diet! We are considering going SCD. He eats only the following: Replacement carb products like gfcfsfsf pancakes, bread, crackers, muffins, pretzels, etc. that use the various replacement flours, mostly rice based (some contain corn) Gfcfsfsf chicken nuggets that I make Potato Sweet potato Broccoli Lima beans Nuts Peas Very rarely banana mixed berry baby food and pear baby food He has never in his life even tried a raw fruit or vegetable. Before the diet fruits had been limited down to baby food banana or banana mixed with something else. My husband had diverticulitus and had surgery at age 29 to remove a portion of his colon so the family history is there. My son was tested via Metametrix Triad test kit and was found not to have a yeast issue but he was found to have bacterial overgrowth. I have been told by a couple of mothers that he likely has yeast and the test just was not sensitive enough. My son has received probiotics since we started the diet. The only way I can get him to take them is to put them in his water. I am better at getting him to drink the bottom of his sippy cup now than I was before (maybe most of the probiotic was settling to the bottom). Would this have something to do with his soft stools again? My DAN doctor says to wait and stay on the basic diet longer. I guess I could go the route of testing with a more sensitive test for yeast, using antibiotics or antifungals, or cleaning out his system entirely and giving probiotics. But I understand that many people have to go SCD after going through all of this anyway. Most importantly my son will go to school in January for a full day so I feel that I should do major diet changes now so that he is used to them before school. I feel like the holidays will be my last opportunity for a while. I am considering hunkering down and doing the specific carbohydrate diet over Christmas while my husband will be here to help me. The only other info I can give is that I don't think I ever saw any additional benefits to my son with the gfcfsfsf diet other than the formed stools for a while. He is now receiving the MB12 shots (Neubrander) and I definitely think he is a responder for this – better cognitively. Sorry for the long post but I have a couple of questions. I am trying to get fully prepared before the holidays so I can do this. I am looking at the intro diet and I am doubtful that my son will eat any of it. Should I just force the issue or start the diet with anything he will eat regardless of stage? I see chicken pancakes on the intro diet. what are those? Also we are casein free for the last 2 and 1/2 months. When would I be able to try the homemade yogurt for him? In my preparation should I get proGurt, a yogurt maker, epsom salts, activated charcoal, enzymes (we currently aren't doing these)? Any other advice? I really appreciate all of you that pay it forward to our kids! thank you for your time!!
