I am still confused on weather to use raw goats milk or pasturized

when starting the yogart. What are the majority of people using? What

are the benefits of the raw if you are cooking it at high temps anyway?

I just want to do what is going to be most beneficial to my son's

health, I would appreciate more opinions on this subject please. It's

going on 4 months and I want to get started.

Thanks, Patti Gamble

Patti,

When it comes to raw vs. commercial goat milk, I personally think the commercial

stuff makes yogurt that tastes like something I wouldn't give my dog. Now

that's just MY personal opinion. When it is pasteurized commercially it changes

the taste and consistency. The yogurt made from raw goat milk is thicker than

commercial goat milk and tastes world's better. My non-SCD husband is HOOKED on

my SCD goat yogurt. He won't eat any commercial yogurts at all now. Now some

people can't find it, but I drive 150 miles 3 - 4 times a year specifically to

buy raw goat milk. I freeze it. As far as bacteria goes, the heating does kill

all the bad bugs, it just tastes better when you do it. Now I won't use it if I

haven't pasteurized it. If I ran out of a raw goat milk supply, I would just do

probiotic and no yogurt unless I could handle cow milk, which my son cannot yet.

We are spoiled now. It's so good.

I am going to use pasteurized. Heating the goat's milk

will kill whatever bacteria is in the raw milk

regardless. I wouldn't use raw if given the option

because I don't trust it. In my opinion, there should

be no difference in benefit.

Coming from someone who is older and was raised with livestock and have owned

goats in the past. Raw milk is fine and safe as long as where you are buying it

can tell you that their goats or cows have been tested and are free of disease.

A reputable dairyman knows this and will have no problem furnishing you with

proof.

Has anyone noticed a difference in taste between

brands of goat milk? I only see one brand at my

grocery store so I was wondering. I remember back in

my cow milk days that brands varied considerably in

flavor.
