Guest guest
we have had our 3 1/2 yr old on scd for a year now. for 1 full year he self-limited his diet to include: fruit juices, fruit leather, applesauce, eggs, cookies with honey and almond nut flour and pork rinds. i know now that we were feeding his yeast and this time around we are pulling almost all fruit and honey to starve the yeastie beasties out. i am sure his cravings for natural sugar will stop after a while without these food items. the only way we were able to get him to eat intro foods was through a syringe while my husband holds him down. he hates it but he is finally getting the foods he is supposed to get & is " perking up " . it is a relief to finally get goat yogurt into his malnutritioned little body. we are pureeing chicken, carrots, yogurt, dccc and eggs. his beverages are water and very diluted grape juice. he still has diarhea so i will continue the intro for 5 days. when he is on stage 1 his beverage will only be fresh squeezed lemonade with a tinge of aluminum-free baking soda to get rid of acidity (no more fruit juices). this time i am not going to introduce later stage foods too soon and don't care if we have to syringe feed him for a year as long as we know he is getting what he is supposed to get. my son, cole, is the kid who went 9 days without eating when we 1st started scd 1 yr ago so i expect he will be on the 2 tsp syringe feedings for quite some time. our rehab center told us that force feeding was bad. we saw no other " option " . has anyone else had to go to these extremes to get good healthy scd food into their kids? eileen (mom with heavy metal toxicity & cfs) mom of 2 asd kids and 1 NT who also has digestive issues
Guest guest
Eileen, just FYI, my understanding is that the yogurt and DCCC are not on the intro diet -- wondering if that is contributing to the loose BM? I am glad to hear he is perking up though! Guest guest
i thought dccc and yogurt were allowed in the intro because it is in the cheesecake recipe. i hope i don't have to start the intro over again. > > > > we have had our 3 1/2 yr old on scd for a year now. for 1 full year > > he self-limited his diet to include: fruit juices, fruit leather, > > applesauce, eggs, cookies with honey and almond nut flour and pork > > rinds. i know now that we were feeding his yeast and this time > around > > we are pulling almost all fruit and honey to starve the yeastie > > beasties out. i am sure his cravings for natural sugar will stop > > after a while without these food items. the only way we were able > to > > get him to eat intro foods was through a syringe while my husband > > holds him down. he hates it but he is finally getting the foods he > is > > supposed to get & is " perking up " . it is a relief to finally get > goat > > yogurt into his malnutritioned little body. we are pureeing > chicken, > > carrots, yogurt, dccc and eggs. his beverages are water and very > > diluted grape juice. he still has diarhea so i will continue the > > intro for 5 days. when he is on stage 1 his beverage will only be > > fresh squeezed lemonade with a tinge of aluminum-free baking soda > to > > get rid of acidity (no more fruit juices). this time i am not going > > to introduce later stage foods too soon and don't care if we have > to > > syringe feed him for a year as long as we know he is getting what > he > > is supposed to get. my son, cole, is the kid who went 9 days > without > > eating when we 1st started scd 1 yr ago so i expect he will be on > the > > 2 tsp syringe feedings for quite some time. > > > > our rehab center told us that force feeding was bad. we saw no > > other " option " . has anyone else had to go to these extremes to get > > good healthy scd food into their kids? > > > > eileen (mom with heavy metal toxicity & cfs) > > mom of 2 asd kids and 1 NT who also has digestive issues > > >
Guest guest
Since you are in such a difficult situation, I will say what I think and hope that it will help you. If I were in your situation, I would do several things differently. To begin with, I would start on the Caveman Diet. The Caveman Diet is SCD, but unlike the starter diet kids usually go on, it begins with a list of foods that rarely if ever cause food sensitivities. I would get an IGG delayed food sensitivity test and then, slowly add foods to the Caveman that are from the SCD legal list, but without the things that my child is sensitive to. I would not force feed him for several reasons. First, because if he has an inflamed and unhealthy digestive system, which I would bet my life on, he may not be absorbing much anyway and forcing it down him won't help him heal. Second, because parents provide love and support, and our kids need love and support more than other children. Force feeding him pulls that relationship apart and gives him and you more stress. Stress is the enemy of absorbtion and the enemy of enjoyment. Enjoying food is part of why we eat. You can find the Caveman Diet here: http://www.childrenscornerschool.com/diet.htm I would not feed him eggs, almonds or carrots until after the IGG test results came back. Many people cannot digest these foods. I wouldn't give him baking soda with his juice. Instead of goat yogurt I would go 100% non dairy and give him coconut keifer instead. I also think sensory problems might be adding more problems for him. There is a wonderful video on youtube from philcommander about getting your child to eat foods he doesn't like. I suggest you take a look. mrsdeals wrote: we have had our 3 1/2 yr old on scd for a year now. for 1 full year he self-limited his diet to include: fruit juices, fruit leather, applesauce, eggs, cookies with honey and almond nut flour and pork rinds. i know now that we were feeding his yeast and this time around we are pulling almost all fruit and honey to starve the yeastie beasties out. i am sure his cravings for natural sugar will stop after a while without these food items. the only way we were able to get him to eat intro foods was through a syringe while my husband holds him down. he hates it but he is finally getting the foods he is supposed to get & is " perking up " . it is a relief to finally get goat yogurt into his malnutritioned little body. we are pureeing chicken, carrots, yogurt, dccc and eggs. his beverages are water and very diluted grape juice. he still has diarhea so i will continue the intro for 5 days. when he is on stage 1 his beverage will only be fresh squeezed lemonade with a tinge of aluminum-free baking soda to get rid of acidity (no more fruit juices). this time i am not going to introduce later stage foods too soon and don't care if we have to syringe feed him for a year as long as we know he is getting what he is supposed to get. my son, cole, is the kid who went 9 days without eating when we 1st started scd 1 yr ago so i expect he will be on the 2 tsp syringe feedings for quite some time. our rehab center told us that force feeding was bad. we saw no other " option " . has anyone else had to go to these extremes to get good healthy scd food into their kids? eileen (mom with heavy metal toxicity & cfs) mom of 2 asd kids and 1 NT who also has digestive issues --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Guest guest
It depends on why you are doing this diet. It is recommended to start ASD kids with goat milk yogurt instead of cow's milk, which is hard to digest. That would also mean the exclusion of the DCCC. For NT people with ulcerative colitis and such, they can try the cow's milk products. B. Guest guest
I personally think that all ASD kids would benefit from a trial where cow's milk products are taken out for at least a month. I think it should be tested like other foods, since milk products are a common allergen. B. Guest guest
The intro on the Pecanbread site is dairy free for most ASD kids since most people come over to the intro from being GFCF already. The intro in BTVC is not dairy free, but that is meant for people with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, who are not on the spectrum. B. Guest guest
There is the original " breakingtheviciouscycle.com " diet that includes dairy for all those with uc, ibs, etc. It includes the cheesecake, etc as found on the breaking the vicious cycle website. Later they discovered the ASD gut issues and created the non-dairy pecanbread.com intro diet as found on the pecanbread website. The pecanbread website adds goat yogurt a little later and does not include cheesecake on the intro. Pecanbread is meant for all of our ASD kids. Many with ADHD, OCD kids follow with that also. This is the general deal without a lengthy discussion of which I'm sure could elaborate and answer specific questions. Guest guest
Just a reminder that kefir is not SCD legal. Here is the link to the discussion of kefir: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/kefir.htm The Caveman Diet is probably a very good diet. It is not SCD. Only time will tell if it is more helpful to kids on the autism spectrum than SCD is. Things I worry about on the Caveman Diet: fruits and veggies (except apples) are not required to be peeled. Fruits and veggies are not required to be cooked. White vegetables are used. Many white vegetables are starchy: potatos, turnips, parsnips, all have lots of starch. The muffin recipe uses jarred baby food which Elaine did not trust (2% rule). I also do know know, because I have not done the research, whether or not all the supplements suggested are SCD legal. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
