Guest guest
Hi Sheila, Thanks for the advice. I did do the intro for a week but got sicker and sicker and finally ended up in the ER. They put me on IV fluids for dehydration, pain meds and nausea meds. They did a CAT scan which showed bowel inflammation, did bloodwork that ruled out other infection. I agreed to 40 mg Pred so I could go home and see my GI this week. I could not eat any of the diet for the first few days, the nausea was so bad so I had mostly toast & crackers. Then the Pred kicked in and I have been an insane woman. I had 5 cookies at a party last night when I should have gone home and taken a sedative! This drug makes me crazy...I can't tell you how mentally unstable I am. Does the Pred increase the bad bugs, thereby making the cravings worse? How do I combat these? It's worse at night. And I am severely constipated, bloated and uncomfortable. Saturday was the last day of movement which was Dx3. I took Mirilax this am and it worked a tiny bit with the prune juice and coffee I had for breakfast. I'm really uncomfortable! So now, I'm just trying to eat the broader SCD diet and get through to the next step which will be meds with my GI for awhile. He wants to discuss 6MP or Methotrexate. Any experince with either of these meds with the diet? Thanks for any help and support! Liz Hi Liz, > > Hi, > I was doing great and had a moment of hubris (hamburg blue cheese carmelized onion & some fresh fruit) at a restaurant couple of weeks back that made me sick and now I am not returning to the good health I had before or even the symptom pattern before I got well! It's got me very concerned - so much that I wondered if I got a stomach bug but it's off and on for weeks now so I'm not so sure that's true. I've even lost 5 lbs and my period stopped - which makes me think I'm starving myself - which feels true as well as I'm only eating scrambled eggs, chicken, chicken soup with long cooked mashed carrots, BTVC yogurt & honey, mint/ginger tea and occasional walnut flour pancakes. I'm hungry and cramped all the time now with bouts of nausea and my BMs are always loose & sometimes mucus only. > > My question is this - I took Activated Charcoal when I was on the toilet constantly and now it's tapered but still very loose. Should (can) I take charcoal ongoing?>>>> This site: http://www.enzymest uff.com/activate dcharcoal. htm says that for diarrhea you should only take Act. charcoal for 3-4 days. I am guessing it means at the dosing for diarrhea posted on that page. <<<<Also, how do you know you have a stomach but when you have UC? I haven't gone to the MD b/c I'm not wanting to take antibiotics but at this point I'm not sure anything could be worse. > > In need of support and guidance, > Liz K > UC 4 yrs, SCD 2 months>>> Did you mean stomach flu? It may be a flare or it may be from the restaurant fare. Either way, the quickest way to help get through either is usually a few days on the strict intro diet. Guest guest
Liz, You are in a bad situation. Prednisone messes up your blood sugar so you will be constantly hungry and craving simple starches. If you can cut those out, you will not be hungry all the time anymore. Try eating a lot of cooked squash instead. I find that water with lemon settles my stomach and lemon turns alkaline in the body so it hopefully will not bother you. I have been on MTX. It kills your appetite when you are not eating tons of starches. You will have to have blood work either every month or every other month to make sure it is not damaging your liver. You should not drink any alcohol while on it. It is also highly toxic to a fetus and can cause severe birth defects or miscarriage so make sure you have excellent contraceptives of some kind in place. Basically it is a low dose chemotherapy drug. You will probably notice your hair thinning out as a side effect. Taking a lot of folic acid will help combat this. It sounds scary but it is important to get your symptoms under control for now. Hopefully you will be able to try the intro again. I really think it can do you a lot of good, but you have to get your symptoms under control first. Prednisone is very bad to be on long term and once you get better, you will be able to start to step down on it. Good luck! B.
