Hi Tabaitha,

Regular vanilla extracts are not legal. I have found

legal brands at Whole Foods.

Hi Tina,

I just substitute almond butter. I don't want to try

peanut butter until later. There are other concerns

with peanuts too, like mold.

Yea I heard that too, about the mold. I personally think the amond butter is

not good. I made pancakes with it this morning and my kids wouldn't eat them.

I made the almond butter brownies. They were

surprisingly good. I did add 1/2 tsp of SCD vanilla to

the recipe in BTVC.

You do have to remember to add salt since usually

peanut butter has added salt, so that can make a big

difference in flavor.

If you bought it from Lucy's Kitchen Shop, it's

legal. She doesn't carry questionable items.

I have a friend that makes vanilla.... take a quart of vodka... 80-100 proof...

and place 4-6 vanilla beans- cut open length-wise in jar. Shake every once in a

while. Ready in 6 weeks.

(much cheaper-- bought beans from AMAZON... not bad $$)

Take care!

I wanted to try that, but I read that while the

vanilla made that way for baked goods will be fine,

you cannot use that vanilla to flavor things that are

uncooked (like if you made an SCD frosting or

something). You would still taste the alcohol.

So if you only use it for baking, that would work. If

vodka is OK. I think you can use bourbon too, I think

bourbon is legal.

What about this for ingredients: water, propylene glycol, vanillin,

caramel color, sodium benzoate, phosphoric acid, ethyl vanillin. Not

the most natural sounding list but it was the only one I could find

without corn syrup.

The caramel color could have illegals in it and some of the other

ingredients sound kinda scary. Can you do a web search for some of

the brands recommended earlier?

I found Spice Island Vanilla at Albertson's. It has no strange ingredients or

corn syrup. I only buy it when it is on sale for 33% off.

I think caramel color is not the best because some

people say it has gluten...wait, this is all vanillin.

You should be looking for vanilla, with an a. Vanillin

is synthetic and thus an artificial flavor. Right?

There are at least two different legal brands at Whole

Foods. Do you have a health food store of any kind

around you?

Hi, ,

I thought so, too, until I went to the Knowledge Base and saw that

vanillin is ok; it's what gives vanilla it's flavor. *But* the only

flavorings I've ever seen that use vanillin instead of vanilla are

loaded with strange/illegal ingredients. So I think we do want to look

for pure vanilla extract (with only legal ingredients).
