Guest guest
2 main questions about starting SCD: 1) how long after starting SCD did you notice any significant weight gain/growth? 2) can you be SCD legal if taking iron? Please see details below: My 11yr. old daughter has Crohn's and her GI is concerned that she is malnutritioned. We have been working with a naturopathic doctor on her diet, and we found out through an IGG blood test that she cannot tolerate eggs or milk casein. We just removed the allergens from her diet, and added a multivitamin with iron within the last month, so it doesn't seem it has been enough time for these things to show up on her bloodwork yet. The GI of course isn't as concerned with food allergies/diet. Within 3 days after starting the vitamin/iron her energy was back up completely to normal. She feels fine, but this GI is pushing for another colonoscopy and he wants us to consider putting her on enterral tube feeds. I do want her to start growing myself, but after researching, I think the SCD diet will accomplish the same thing as the tube feeding. (The doctors know the tube feeds work, but yet they don't really know why). So my question is - how long after starting SCD did you see noticeable weight gain and/or growth? If our GI will agree to wait another month or two and see if she makes progress with this diet, my daughter has finally told me she would rather do this diet than the tube feeds! (Prior to this, she said she would rather die than do the SCD diet). One other question about the iron - she is anemic from iron deficiency, and I avoided any iron supplements for the longest time because we had been told it could be irritating to the gut. However, getting desperate, we finally tried a good quality multivitamin with the iron in liquid form, and it improved her energy tremendously. I am confused if she can be legal SCD while on any iron. I see on the legal list of supplements, that Kirkman's Multiple Mineral Pro-Support is legal, but it only has 2mg of iron. My daughter cannot swallow capsules. Thank You, Diane D. 11yr old daughter/Crohn's dx Jun 2007
Guest guest
Hi, Diane, I do not know how long before significant weight gain/growth, I just know it happens. This was not 's issue. Maybe some parents who experienced this will post. Iron supplements are known for causing gut problems. We would prefer that your dd get iron from liver and other food sources. Dried liver also comes in capsules for those who hate eating it. Also, I have read that there are iron shots that would by-pass the gut, but I read that they can be painful. Here is some information about absorbing iron from the Knowledge Base: Seth writes: " There are certain supplements you can take to help absorb iron better. For one, Vitamin C binds to iron in food and helps facilitate the transportation of iron across the intestines into the bloodstream. Lactoferrin, a protein the body uses to bind to iron, can also be useful if taken by supplement. It binds tightly to iron, keeping it from catalyzing oxidative reactions, keeping it away from pathogenic bacteria, and also helps the body absorb the iron. Lactoferrin supplements can be expensive " mom to -12 SCD 4/23/
Guest guest
Diane, I do remember reading that the reason the tube feeding works is because it is a source of monosaccharide sugars, much like the SCD provides in the early stages. Sorry I can't answer for much more than that. But I definitely think a month or two on SCD would be a great thing to try. The benefit of the early stages is that when you eat very easily digested foods, it gives the whole digestive system a break, and thus a chance to heal itself. B.
