In fact, I tried the intro during the 2 week flare and got so sick I ended up in the ER on IV fluids. So pay attention to what is working and what is not. I surrendered to Pred this time again so I could go home to my bed instead of admitting myself and of course feel regretful at the current level because of the side effects. But tomorrow it goes down some more and then I plan to taper it so slowly once I get my head back on straight. What does Pred do to your son that you don't like? Is there a tinsy tiny dose to get you through the short run and healing again from the diet? I'm reading a great book now called the Alchemy of Illness and it really turns upside down our notions of health and illness and examines the transformative nature of surrender when sick. My heart goes out to you trying to heal your son - I have two small kids myself and as hard as it is sometimes, I think you have to be so much stronger and courageous when it's your own child! I can say I had my success when I started the yogurt 1/4 tsp and increased slowly. I don't have a lot of money so I figured out the heating pad technique. This is the link:http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/yoghurt/heating_pad\ _yoghurt.htm that I have found helpful. I've read other people's concerns with the yogurt makers overheating and not working well. There are other techniques and tricks to work with them but I've found this to work very well. A couple of notes: First, I put the pan in a cooler which has a layer of a towel then the heating pad around the bottom of the pan. I would add that I make sure I heat the milk in the pan back to 110 degrees before placing it in the cooler b/c it cools a bit when you transfer it to the cooler. Keeping the towel and pad snug around the pan and the lid tight keeps the warm moisture inside so it maintains. The website says cool to 100 degrees but I follow the book on the temperature guidelines instead. My next consult will be with an MD who practices integretive medicine and aggressively diagnoses and treats yeast which is something I suspect has been an ongoing problem for me (as evidenced by improvement with s bouldardi and yogurt and years ago symptoms). Anyway, good luck. Hope this post makes sense with this crazy Pred brain I'm living with! Liz K UC 4 yrs, SCD 8/07 The problem with the intro diet is hates soup. Any soup. It's a nightmare to get him to try and eat it. He's so good about the diet being only 7 yrs old - he turns down illegals and really has such a good attitude, I just can't bear to force him to do the intro. We already do mostly protein as it is.... the S Boulardi he has never tolerated as we tried that and I'm scared of our yogurt maker - we think it's over heating the yogurt. The first batch I suspected was too hot ended up being fine but the last one seemed to bother both kids though it took some time for the flare to come about. My dh dripped that batch so I didn't take the temp so I really don't know if it was bad or not, but it was kind of runny. I shouldn't have let my kids eat it. Anyone recommend a good yogurt maker?
