'Nuther Black Stool Question

We've been doing the SCD for 5-6 days and my 2 year old started

getting watery black diarrhea today, only 2 times (morning and night).

He doesn't appear in any discomfort when he passes them, they aren't

the foulest things in the world. But they are black nonetheless. Is

this the die-off or could it be from consuming diluted grape juice?

Also, he's a carnivore and seems to only want to eat meat (chicken and

turkey) or eggs. I've tried making the chicken pancakes, chicken

muffins, and banana pancakes w/no luck. He'll consume fruit smoothies

and diluted juice but no veggies unless they're hidden. Is this ok -

the whole carnivore thing?

Just looking for some reassurance since I'm a newbie and feel like I'm

living on an island cooking all the time.

Thanks,

Are you giving activated charcoal?

A lot of grape may darken stool

Is it sticky black (tarry) stool?

Is he takinh any iron supplements?

Does he normally not eat much red meat?

Is it really black or is it greenish or a different hue?

Hi Sheila -

What is activated charcoal? I've heard about it.

The stool is black and very wet diarrhea. The 3rd one before bed was

alot less watery, but still not solid.

No supplements are being used.

He doesn't eat any red meat yet, he used to get hives from it so I

haven't added it back to his diet.

Thanks!

If there are no supps involved or act charcoal, call your ped and

insist on a GI ref...I believe that black watery stools is one of the

diagnostic markers for Crohn's disease...if the color is not

somehting he is taken in then the color is coming from something

already in him like old blood from an ulcer in his gut etc...black is

not a desirable color for bowel moevements...esp if you cannot

connect it logically to anything he is being fed...I would be on top

of that with a specialist as soon as possible. THough it is good

that it doesn't hurt him...the color is not okay. Please let us know

how he is doing...Di

Activated charcoal is an adsorptive and absorptive agent that can be

used for die off. It is also commonly used for poisonings and

diarrhea.

It is very common to have severe stool colour changes at the

beginning of the diet.

Black tarry stools *may* indicate that there is blood in the stool.

I have also seen very dark diarrhea stools (very dark green) that

were die off stools.

If you are concerned that there may be blood you should have them

checked out by a doctor/health practioner.

Thanks for everyones information and support! I was so nervous a

couple days ago staring into those black diapers... Yesterday it was

still dark, but turned more dark brown/green and a little less wet.

Then today he had 2 solid poops that were dark. I didn't give him any

purple grape juice today so I'm going to find out tomorrow if that was

the culprit, or like others said, it may have just been some die off.

Yes, it sounds as if they were die off stools. With die off the

stools can turn all sorts of weird colours and the dark green kind can

look almost black. As the toxins clear out you notice the green

colour more. The stools should continue too improve in colour until

you have a nice brown colour (it may take a while though). The

indicator that it likely wasn't blood in the stool was the other

improvements you listed.
