Guest guest
I have crohn's disease and have been on the diet for only three weeks. Everything seemed to be getting better but for the last five days I have had all my normal symptoms. I have been very strict about the diet so I have no idea why this is happening. Does anyone with IBD have any suggestions for getting things back to squre one again?

Guest guest
Hi, Ashle, Well, for openers, I can tell you, from personal experience, that raw fruit at the outset of the diet is a Bad Idea. Some people may do well with Lara bars. I trust no manufactured product -- if you gotta have dates and dried fruits (which are fairly advanced foods), buy the dry fruits you like, and some nut flour, and stuff Medjool dates with it. Darn sight safer. Don't know what your probiotic is, but if your Blue Heron fiber supplement is this one http://www.drugnatural.com/p/746454 it is so SCD-illegal it makes me nauseous just looking at the ingredients. Flax (Linum usitatissimum) Seed 1200 mg *,Psyllium (Plantago ovata) Seed Husk 1200 mg *, Rice (Oryza sativa) Bran 1200 mg *,Dried Plum (Prunus domestica) Fruit 180 mg *,Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) Seed 150 mg *,Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra) Bark 150 mg *,Triphala (a blend of amla fruit (Phyllanthus emblica), belleric myrobalan fruit (Terminalia bellerica, and chebulic myrobalan fruit (Terminalia chebula)) 150 mg *,Spectra Probiotic Proprietary Blend(Lactobacillus acidophhilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium infantis, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus salivarius, and Streptococcus thermophilus) 60 mg *,Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) Root Extract 3.5:1 48 mg *, Papain (Papaya enzyme 6,000 USP units/mg) 30 mg *. *Daily Value (DV) not established. Other Ingredients:rice flour and natural polysaccharide capsule. Man, if I took even one of the items I marked in red, I'd be sicker than a Dawg. That you're taking ALL of them makes me shudder. Liquid multi-vitamins often have a ton of illegals in them. What is yours? Hope there aren't any more like this in your repertoire! By the way, I did not use the standard intro diet, either. I ate soft boiled eggs, sliced roast beef, sliced roast pork, and steamed zucchini for months before I could tolerate anything else. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Hi , How are you doing now? I hope your flare up is better. Something that I have thought about IBD and the SC diet is that, even though a person's body might be " used " to eating certain things, you see that the body is NOT tolerating those things b/c the body has developed IBD. When you start SCD, you're giving your body a nice break from all those other things, and, when it finds itself staring at an advanced food, the body suddenly makes it pretty darn clear that it doesn't like it. I hope that made a modicum of sense....In my mind it does, but I see it's harder to get written down. When my dd was diagnosed w. Crohn's 1.5 years ago, we were surprised (stunned, really) to find out that she was also discovered by biopsy to be lactose intolerant. She had always eaten dairy products without any of the difficulties that one would normally associate with lactose intolerance. But there it was. So even if we thought she was fine with it, her body really wasn't. She has been SCD since diagnosis, with three very minor flares. Each time we brought her diet back down to the into diet and, after she was symptom-free, started up the chain veeeeery slowly. She does eat Lara bars (I know many on here don't b/c they are a processed food), but only after she was symptom-free for six months. Try the " real " into and proceed slowly and see how you do. This might be just the thing for you. Good luck, Ellen
Guest guest
I brought this up to my doctor and she told me that the body does not digest the fiber that it goes right through so I do not have to worry about it. I don't claim to understand that but I do not really know why she would suggest one thing but give me another. I also just went back for the flare up and she prescrivbed me a bark tea that is also not legal but told me to stick with the diet! I think Im going to stop taking it and just try to get back to square one. Thanks for all the help! > > > Hi, Ashle, > > Well, for openers, I can tell you, from personal > experience, that raw fruit at the outset of the diet is a Bad Idea. > > Some people may do well with Lara bars. Guest guest
Thanks! I think you are right I will need to start all over again, but that starter diet is just gross and boring. I know that it is a sacrafice that I will have to make. The falre up has been happening for about a week, and my doctor has tried prescribing me a naturapatic cure but one of them is a bark tea that is illegal. > > Hi , > > How are you doing now? Ashle, The problem is that many doctors and so-called nutritionists really don't understand the science and the parameters of the SCD. For MOST people, the fiber just goes through and is not digested, but not for those of us with gut issues. I am obese, could not lose, but when I went SCD, without moderating the amount of food I ate, I dropped 75 pounds in six months. I was no longer feeding the bad bacteria, and they were no longer breaking down the fiber and turning it into absorbable calories. I am now losing more slowly, but I am continuing to lose. In addition, naturopaths prescribe stuff like marshmallow and slippery elm (included in your fiber supplement) on the mistaken notion that because they a mucilaginous substance, they will " soothe " your injured gut. But the very thing which makes them mucilaginous is STARCH, the very thing we eliminate on the SCD. All those bifidobacteria again, MAY be good for ordinary people, but experience has demonstrated that they overgrow quite enthusiastically for those of us with damaged guts. (I tested them... ain't going there no more!) But that's why they're illegal, because unlike acidophilus, they are not team players. It is one thing to take a prescription medicine which may contain some illegals because you can't get it compounded without them. It is another thing to be putting herb teas and " fiber supplements with probiotics " which are totally illegal in your body, thinking you are SCD, when these substances mean you aren't. I get really, really angry when I see posts like yours, because I wonder how many other people give up on SCD because of bad advice, thinking it did not work. When it would have -- if they hadn't been told something illegal was " good for them. " You may wish to go back to the intro for a few days, get that stuff out of your system. If you have constipation, check out Elaine's constipation protocol. And, there are many folks here who have excellent advice about dealing with it without the use of illegals. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
