Guest guest
Hi sheila, Thanks for your thoughts. Couple of further questions: sheilatrenholm1 Sun Dec 16, 2007 1:05 am (PST) Hi Liz, > > Thanks everyone for your suggestions about the recent flare up of mine. I'm still confused though - is the Prednisone helping or masking?>>>> The prednisone can do both IMO. It boosts your body so you can get over the flare but not necessarily treat the root cause of the flare. SO I GUESS THIS MEANS THAT I SHOULD NOT PUSH MY MD'S RECCOMENDATION FOR THE TAPER AND TREATING THE ROOT IS THE MICROBE IMBALANCE, RIGHT? DOES PRED MAKE YEAST WORSE? <<<< This is what the dilemma is - how fast to taper and what foods to eat right now?>>>> You should definitely consult with your doctor about this. If you taper too fast your body won't be able to restart producing enough of its own steroids and you can flare up again. Your docto r will probably base your wean schedule on how severe you were and how your symptoms are now. The foods to eat will depend on how your symptoms are right now. As you wean off prednisone your body may not tolerate the same foods and if they are too advanced they could trigger a relapse. It is a balancing act. I FOUND THIS TO BE TRUE THE LAST TIME I WAS ON PRED BUT RESISTED UPPING OR STAYING ON THE CURRENT LEVEL BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE DIET WAS THE KEY.<<<<<Has anyone been on Pred and an antifungal at the same time? Is it a wash?>>>>> Do you mean is it a waste to take the antifungal? Probably not. WHAT I MEAN IS DOES PRED CAUSE AN INCREASE IN YEASTIES SO GETTING OFF SOONER HELPS GET THE YEAST UNDER CONTROL? I'M HEARING YOU SAY THAT YOU CAN DO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME (DECREASE OVERACTIVE IMMUNE SYSTEM AND FIGHT YEAST ON PRED). If your problem is yeast then treating the yeast while haveing your body supported by pred may help start get the yeasties under control. Double check with your doctor and/or pharmacist that the antifungal you plan to take won't interfere with pred or any or meds you are taking. If/When you start the anti-fungals you may experience die off. This can make constipation worse. to alleviate this do epsom salt baths, gradually increase up to a full dose of antifungals (don't start at a full dose). Also please read http://www.pecanbre ad.com/new/ yeast.html http://www.pecanbre ad.com/new/ yeastsheila. html http://www.pecanbre ad.com/new/ coprotocol. htm <<<<<Should I not be eating more advanced foods right now even though it keeps the cravings under control? I'm having such a hard time with the elimination part of the diet... MY SYMPTOMS ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT THIS TIME AROUND. I FEEL LIKE I'VE TRADED ONE BAG OF SICKNESS FOR ANOTHER. THE D HAS STOPPED NOW AND THE C HAS GOTTEN MUCH BETTER BUT THE GAS/ABD DISTENDED BELLY/INDIGESTION NO MATTER WHAT IS EATEN HAS BEEN A CONSTANT FOR A WEEK NOW. I'M ON 30 MG OF PRED (DOWN FROM 40 3 DAYS AGO) AND EATING STAGE 1 & 2 COOKED/PEELED FOODS INCLUDING ALMOND FLOUR (TO HELP WITH THE C). I STOPPED THE RAW FOODS (BUT IT HELPED CURB THE CARB CRAVES IN THE BEGINNING). I STARTED OIL OF OREGANO AS WELL COUPLE DAYS AGO - MAYBE THAT'S HELPING TOO. I GO SEE THE INTEGRETIVE MEDICINE MD ON THE 27TH TO SEE ABOUT THE YEASTIES. ANY OTHER SUGGESIONS? LIZ UC 4 YRS SCD 8/07 It depends on your symptoms now and what foods you are eating and what your dose of pred is. Generally it isn't a good idea to wean too fast. Especially between 15-5 mg. <<<<< DOES PRED MAKE YEAST WORSE?>>>> Not sure. I don't recall reading that it does or seeing any reports of it from SCDers. Some may get them but it may be more a reflection of a previous mild yeast overgrowth made worse by foods eaten when on the steroids. Steroids can make you very hungry and give you cravings. <<<<<<<<< This is what the dilemma is - how fast to taper and what foods > to eat right now?>>>> > > You should definitely consult with your doctor about this.
