Guest guest
This is for my daughter who I am transitioning into SCD. She is coughing constantly from this drip and I don't know what to give her. I would rather not go the over the counter remedy if there is a natural option to try first. She is three years old. Thanks! son, 3yo, PDD-NOS, SCD since 11/20/07 daughter 3yo, transitioning to SCD
Guest guest
, New recommendations state that cold medicines are basically ineffective for children, and anything that stops them from coughing up what's draining can actually be dangerous. If she stops coughing, the congestion will sit in her lungs and become a breeding ground for bacteria, which can cause a more serious infection. Cough suppressants can only be used if it's a dry, non-productive cough, where you can't hear mucus rattling around. So that's more ammo for avoiding the OTC stuff. There are plenty of natural remedies that can be very helpful. First, make sure she's drinking lots of liquid. Drinking liquid is an effective decongestant on its own. Try having her sit in the bathroom while you run a hot shower. That can help loosen congestion. A humidifier can help if she's coughing more from breathing through her mouth and her throat is drying out in the process. If that's not it and it's truly from the drip, don't worry about it. You can also prop her up in bed at night on a slant with blankets underneath her pillow. Prop her up on the couch for naps the same way, since because of all the coughing she will need more sleep to get enough rest. Some people stack blankets under the mattress to get a good slant that way, but that never worked for me. I had asthma all through my childhood, which manifested as a pretty endless string of bronchitis and pneumonia episodes, and all of these measures were taken for me. I slept sitting up a lot. So I have first hand experience. I hope that helps! B. Guest guest
, Thanks--We will definitely stay away from the OTC meds. She is fine except for the cough. Ususally it is worse at night when she is laying down so I will try propping her up tonight. Today she just seems to be coughing a lot during the day. Thanks for the suggestions, I will be putting them to use! son ,3yo, PDD-NOS, SCD since 11/20/07 daughter,3yo, starting the transition to SCD -------------- Original message -------------- , New recommendations state that cold medicines are basically ineffective for children, and anything that stops them from coughing up what's draining can actually be dangerous. Guest guest
Hi, Tina, Other ingredients in children's liquid benedryl are illegal. Some parents get the tablets and cut in half and grind them and put in applesauce or something like that. mom to -12 SCD 4/23/

Guest guest
Practically every commercial kid's medicine has sugar in it in some form, as well as artificial colors and flavors. Wasn't there a news story that all of these medications for children under 6 are now NOT recommended? Oh, here's a story. http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/10/19/coldmed.fda/index.html B. Guest guest
Crazy! I guess it's a little different for me. I've always had trouble breathing with all sorts of illnesses so I know what is serious and what isn't, but that's terrible. Steroids? Sheesh. I had asthma as a kid much worse than I have it now. You're right, though, it is scary. I still have trouble with having things around my neck because of the psychological trauma, and sometimes I dream that I can't breathe. That happened a lot more when I was younger, though. B. ASD son, RA self, SCD Nov. 2007 http://scdgirl.blogspot.com ************ --- adtahoe wrote: > And they produce yeast!!!
