Guest guest
Thank you, and Sheila for yogurt info. I am going to throw this batch out, buy a yogurt maker and start over. Besides cooling it according to the BTVC website's *other* instructions, I've just checked the yogurt and found it has dipped below 100 for at least the second time --and possibly for up to five hours (since I was sleeping)-- and when I turned the oven on to get the temp back up, I forgot about it for several minutes and it rose to 120. I can't believe the number of problems we ran into, which are all the more frustrating because DS and I are both so hungry!!! We didn't really have two days to waste on incorrect instructions posted on the BTVC website, a lightbulb method that doesn't work, etc. Argh. How anyone else is getting through these horrible hungry weeks while working, breastfeeding, racing after a toddler, cooking new foods from scratch, ruining half of them, walking 4 kms back to the store to start over, etc, is truly beyond me. ::sigh:: Baden, extremely hungry mother to an extremely hungry 3 yr old with suspected autism and celiac; SCD 0 days because we can't even get the intro part right, never mind the yogurt or anything else... Guest guest
Hang in there! You can do it. Do the best you can! I don't have much to offer except that when you add new things to your life it takes a bit to get used to a new schedule or routine. You sound very very busy. I found the best way to get alot of cooking done is when everyone is sleeping! Then cook cook cook and store store store. When you have the major meat and soup cooked, then slowly cook some other things like jello or such... Maybe get some things stored up, before you actually start your day 1 of scd? Good luck you can do it. sandy uc since 2004 scd 3 weeks freecyclefish wrote: Thank you, and Sheila for yogurt info. I am going to throw this batch out, buy a yogurt maker and start over. Guest guest
Thanks, Sandy. You said you don't have much to offer, but your words of encouragement do help! About getting stuff done while they sleep --yeah. I woke up at 3 this morning and got busy. (Unfortunately, toddler woke at 4 and got busy, too. I have some daycare hours today and am going to use them to 'run away'.) In the meantime, bad batch thrown out, diapers washed, dishes done, house organized and shopping list made. I'm a self-employed single parent and adding more to that is a back breaker. I'll have to start over with better preparation. I am going to do exactly what you said: plan, stock up, pre-cook and THEN start SCD for real. With this ad hoc approach, we're not getting far at any speed anyway! Guest guest
Hang in there! I'm just starting out, too, and it can all be very frustrating. One thing that I read on here that I thought I'd pass on is a recommendation to start multiple family members at different times. That way, you don't get hungry people experiencing die off at the same time. In my house, I knew that might get UGLY so I started a few weeks ago and will be starting my ASD son on December 26th. I know that I felt pretty crappy for a few days, so if he starts acting out at the beginning, I'll hopefully be more compassionate about it all Best of Luck! Guest guest
I don't know if any of you newbie-cooks do this, but it helps with not getting frantic on the scd diet. ( maybe fanatic, but not frantic!) I've done this pre-scd and found that planning daily meals and snacks for the week, ahead of time, really helps keep me organized. The lists also serve as a journal, to see what foods may be effecting you a few days later. I write everything out. Listing what ingredients I'll need for the week, noticing what leftovers I will have for the next day to pack for lunch. With the holidays coming up it's important to stay on track with planning. Notice in your weekly menu what meals that you'll have to pack for a non-scd-party, or which meals you'll need to make fast, for a hectic day on the run . I review this each night before bed, and list one or two things that I need to cook special for the next day. I only mention this because I see the way most nonscd-people cook a few hours before it's time to eat...most times they panic...can't find anything, don't want to take the time...and end up eating fast food crap. So, stock up on big notebook paper and start writing! sandy scd 3 weeks-love to cook uc since 2004 freecyclefish wrote: Thanks, Sandy. Guest guest
Yeah, that's exactly what I decided I have to do: 1. Rewrite the instructions so they are chronological, etc. 2. Get all the necessary equipment. 3. Plan meals. 4. Change my work schedule (daycare provider won't serve him meat.) 5. Start. Guest guest
Kari, great suggestion re: starting different household members at different times re: die off crabbiness! I started it at the same time because I am nursing him and was concerned with what might be passing through the breastmilk (and confusing any 'test' results, etc). Guest guest
I've been reading your posts, Baden, and just want to say " hang in there " and " good for you " . I think it's great that you're nursing your son. I can't imagine how hard juggling all of this must be for you, but at least you get some super nutritious, ready-made food at your fingertips (umm, well, a little lower). Good luck. I hope you find the right things for your son to get better. Ellen 10 y/o dd scd since 5/06 for Crohn's and, thankfully, doing great

Guest guest
First of all, bless your heart for being a self-employed, single mom, and for taking this diet on for the sake of your son. It's rough at first, but one can adjust. I don't have any other advice to offer that the other moms haven't already. I cook after my son has gone to sleep, and I batch cook broth and silver-dollar turkey burgers on the weekend. I just wanted you to know that I started and gave up, too. Then I started again. About a year ago, I read about the SCD, and knew somehow that I would have to do it to help my son at some point. It was only in the past three months that his neurological problems became so manifest that I was able to gather my courage and begin. I haven't looked back. Guest guest
Dear Grammy and : Thank you both. I just now found your messages in my 'bulk' folder. Good to know someone else quit before restarting! Grammy, thanks for all the vegetarian info, as well as for the other support options. For now, I am just going to continue preparing, while journalling his non-SCD intake and reactions. When my yogurt maker arrives, I will buy the food and start. My father is happy to do the cooking to help. I have hope again! And the return to normal diet is certainly convincing me again of the necessity of trying SCD for real.
