Guest guest
We started SCD last year on January 2, 2007. And as the year comes to a close I began to reflect upon our progress and decided to share with the group. Plus I'm going to print it off and compare again next year. We came here by way of Dr. Natasha -McBride's book, Gut and Psychology Syndrome. It was recommended to me by another homeschooling mom on another list for homeschooling dyslexic children. Zachariah is 13 with severe Dyslexia & Dysgraphia, Sensory Integration, some Aspergers & ADHD characteristics. First off let me say that SCD is the only thing we've done differently this year. We've seen improvement in Zac's penmanship and spelling. These are still clearly dyslexic / dysgraphic but better - many would say his spelling and writing is horrible but WE SEE the improvement. Hey, at least he will spontaneously write now and then when before he never would. He even wrote some thank you notes for birthday gifts back in June and leaves me notes to find when he wants to tell me something and I'm in bed or at work. We have seen a huge, huge improvement in his reading and attitude towards reading. He has gone from " Will you please read this to me? " to reading 100 page game guides that I print off the internet - these are 12 point font and single spaced. He reads them to better play some of his Play Station games. He has also found a love for Manga books - which isn't exactly fantastic literature as they are basically comic books in book binding but he is reading (mom has had to let go of some of her biases about quality literature and accept the fact that at least he is reading SOMETHING . I never thought the day would come when he receives the next book in a favorite series and he sits down immediately and reads it cover to cover! There is an improvement in the ADHD tendencies also. But because we homeschool and utilize other methods than pencil / paper / table work it is harder to pinpoint examples - but I just intuitively sense it is better in subtle ways when I reflect back. The Apsergers characteristics seem to be holding steady, mostly when I think about social skills. He joined a teen group of homeschoolers when he turned 13 in June and some of the social issues/skills stand out - but then it could also be an awkward 13 stage of leaving young childhood behind and trying to find his way with the teens. But it could also be the ADHD tripping him up some because he wants to do more than hang out and talk - he wants to physically DO something - also could just be his age. I also do not notice his eyes being blood shot - before there were days when his eyes just looked horrible by mid afternoon! Many people commented within 2 months that he / we looked healthier - he had gone from wearing size slim pants to husky within the year before SCD and within two months he was back in regular size pants. I think we all feel better over all. He is still an extremely picky eater though - sigh. SCD 1-2-07 W. - age 45 doing it because it is a healthy way to eat. Zachariah - age 13, severe Dyslexia & Dysgraphia , some Aspergers & ADHD characteristics, Ed - age 45, IBS, Fibro, Kidney disease, Familial Tremors, low IGG,
Guest guest
Reward for staying on the SCDiet. I know this may be silly but we are glad that your son is in remission. Keep it simple........................It's cute. GB Just type in a command.. roll over, fetch, bark, etc... (be sure to try " kiss " ) http://www.idodogtricks.com/index_flash.html Ed Wendell wrote: We started SCD last year on January 2, 2007. Guest guest
I've been teaching for 25 years AND dad & I both are avid readers. So ridding ourselves of our prejudices about quality reading material was difficult especially since he has always loved great information books and literature as long as we read it to him. & Yes I do love finding notes from him - I've saved each one. I love that you have " embraced " his reading 'as is'. And you must love find the notes he leaves for you. Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs, PCOD 22yrs mom of and .
